Review: Shirley (2020)

Josephine Decker is one of my favorite new-ish filmmakers. I have been watching her very closely. Her latest is her most ambitious: a semi-fictionalized (based on a semi-fictionalized novel) film about Shirley Jackson, who is played by Elizabeth Moss. I love Shirley Jackson so much I was intrigued to see what Decker and Moss et al would do with it. And see Josephine Decker’s other work. I reviewed Shirley for Ebert.

Elizabeth Moss seems to have inherited the Jodie Foster slot on the industry casting board, slowly and steadily working and kicking ass, decade after decade after decade.

      Right??

So impressed with her. I like how she takes risks too. AND works with new filmmakers. Lending her talent to people just starting out. I really respect that!

After reading your review, I went to the shelves and finally read the book on which this film is based. A few minutes ago, I started watching the film. Elizabeth Moss is a wonder. Thanks for bringing Shirley to my attention.

MFS – You’re welcome!! Yes, I keep thinking about it – I’ve ordered Hangsaman to read – wish I had read it before seeing the film but it’s one of the Jacksons I missed, and am eager to read it!

Thanks for commenting and letting me know what you thought.

and I agree in re: Moss. She’s kicking ass so much.
