“More Than This / There Is Nothing”: Bill Murray in Lost in Translation for Sofia Coppola Month

lost-in-translation

I could feel at the time
There was no way of knowing
Fallen leaves in the night
Who can say where they’re blowing
As free as the wind
Hopefully learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning
More than this
you know there’s nothing
More than this
tell me one thing
More than this
there is nothing
— “More Than This”, Roxy Music

The always-awesome Jeremy Richey over at Moon in the Gutter has been running a “Sofia Coppola Month” for all of May, with terrific screen grabs, commentary, and even Playlists. Jeremy and I go way back: I wrote this piece for him about Elvis in Live a Little Love a Little, and I hosted this QA with him about Elvis as an actor. His site is one of the best film sites out there.

For Sofia Coppola Month, he has had some guest writers, and I wrote a piece on Bill Murray – in Lost in Translation, yes, but also about the entirety of his career. I’ve been wanting to write about him for a long time, so I was pleased to get the chance.

Nice post and that is also one my favorite movie scenes. There is a story out there- probably true-that no matter where he is or what time it is, Murray will call his old friend Mitch Glazer every time he sees the sex scene from Roadhouse and say ” Kelly’s having sex with Patrick Swayze” an then hang up . Glazer has been married to Lynch for well over twenty years.

  2. Thanks so much for the very kind words Sheila and, again, for this amazing piece. It really is quite special…

I was so pleased to be asked to participate. And everyone should go check out the rest of the pieces Jeremy has up for Sofia Coppola Month.

Oh I love Lost in Translation and the soundtrack! Roxie Music always a favorite and I first heard More Then This working in a very crowded noisy restaurant from a jukebox and for a long time I couldn’t hear the lyrics at all but I could feel and hear the longing in this song and Bill Murray captures this longing in his performance. After Lost in Translation was when I got into Bill Murray and checked out all his movies and became a fan. I think Lost in Translation one of the most romantic movies of all time, such chemistry between him and Johansson!

Yes, it’s really amazing what happens to him (and to her – and to the whole emotional space) when “More Than This” starts. Perfect song choice – and he performs it gorgeously. There is just so much going on.

    That’s Roxy Music………what an idiot I am…..
