Sheila, this was wonderful. Thank you SO much for sharing it. I can see why you are so proud of Mike and so fond of him. And I needed to see this. I’m starting a list.

    What a beautiful piece.

    I love this:

// Every so often, try to go 48 hours without talking about what you don’t like. This includes anything about yourself, other people, movies, music, books, art, politics. Exemptions: Foreign dictators and any life-altering disease. //

Fantastic advice. It all is, I think – but that one in particular. See what happens if you try to go 48 hours without talking about what you DON’T like, and see what that might be like.

    I am trying!!

  4. brendan says:

    yeah, that one is amazing.

    gonna try it right now…

although it is thursday and i don’t like friday nights because i am pretty tired by that time…

    darn. gotta start again.

I once saw someone keep changing this rubber bracelet she had on from one wrist to the other, like all day long. I wondered if it was some OCD thing even though she wasn’t really an OCD kinda gal. She said every time she had a complaint, spoken or thought, she changed the bracelet. This is a very positive person and she was changing the frigging thing all day long. It’s amazing how hard this is.

    Bren – hahahahahaha

  7. DBW says:

“Do whatever you must to prevent yourself from putting your enjoyment of friends and family in jeopardy.”

It’s amazing how this one simple thing can raise the level of joy in your life, and how ignoring it lessens that joy. A person who makes his family and friends a priority can live a full live in spite of all the rest of it.

  8. red says:

DBW – Yup. 100%. No exceptions.

  9. David says:

//Life will later do what I, in this instance, chose not to do. When it comes to dashing expectations, life does a bang-up job of setting people straight all by itself. Whatever ineptitudes await him, life will eventually and enthusiastically make known.//

This seems to be an immutable law.

  10. David says:

It’s the enthusiastically part that I have a problem with.

  11. tracey says:

Oh, I do love Cousin Mike.

    Beautiful.

  12. Marisa says:

I keep passing this along to people and keep getting the same reaction; a rush of warmth and familiarity and all are just generally really grateful to have read it.
