Nothing – nothing – nothing is the same.

Goosebumps. Transcendent. Barbra Streisand, 1968, “A Happening in Central Park”, singing “He Touched Me”.

Update: It was a complete coincidence that I happened to post this on National Coming Out Day. I had forgotten. Mitchell reminded me, by saying (in response to this gorgeous performance), “If this doesn’t ease the coming out process, nothing ever will!” So, to all of my out gay friends, bless you, and thank you for being in my life, in all of your glory and warmth and support.

In celebration, let’s all glory in Barbra. She’s at the height of her powers here.

Mitchell – I saw those comments, they were very funny! Sweet.

I think I first saw The Happening in Central Park with you (surprise surprise) – it looks like it was just a magical night. She’s amazing.

I am particularly fond here of her “moment before”. The clip starts, and she sort of peers out at the audience, putting her hand on her forehead – says to the crowd, “I can’t believe it!” (like: there are so many of you) – but then, after that, she takes a moment before the song … you can see her enter its reality, you can SEE HER go PRIVATE in front of thousands of people. She looks down, a little sigh – and that is all it takes for her to walk INTO the song.

Totally magnificent. I love this song, too. She owns it. I can sing, but I had a hell of a time singing this song. There’s quite a range there, but she makes it seem like a natural monologue. Amazing.
