I am a regular film critic for Rogerebert.com. My work has also appeared in The New York Times, The L.A. Times, Sight & Sound<\/em>, and other outlets. I have written numerous DVD booklet essays for Criterion Collection releases, as well as two video-essays included as special features (one on Gena Rowlands and one on the acting in Raging Bull). I wrote the narration scripts for two Academy Awards’ Lifetime Achievement tribute reels: one for Gena Rowlands (read by Angelina Jolie), and the other for Anne V. Coates (read by Diane Lane). I had a biweekly column on Film Comment<\/i> called, “Present Tense<\/a>” (no longer in operation, since Film Comment<\/i> shuttered its doors in the pandemic. But I am proud of that year-long archive of work). I’m a member of the New York Film Critics’ Circle and the National Society of Film Critics.<\/p>\n List of my writing work here.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n An essay about my father ran in the Irish Letters issue of The Sewanee Review<\/i>, the oldest literary journal in the country. <\/p>\n I received a BFA in Theatre from the University of Rhode Island and a Master’s in Acting from the Actors Studio MFA Program. <\/p>\n My script, July and Half of August<\/i> has had public readings at Theatre Wit in Chicago and the Vineyard Theatre in New York. In 2015, one of the scenes was made into a short film, which had its premiere at the 2015 Albuquerque Film and Music Experience, and played at Ebertfest 2017.<\/p>\n I’ve been blogging here since 2002.
