If I picked the winners, a couple of people/movies on these lists would not be there at all, and other choices would be present. I also have a different relationship to the Oscars than most critics seem to, where they treat it as their Super Bowl. In the Super Bowl, there is a definitive winner. Because that’s the kind of game that it is. But I don’t invest in who “wins” an Oscar because honestly: CAN be a “winner” in such a race? It’s ART. Cary Grant never won an Oscar. And so I reject that whole attitude and look at the Oscars as an opportunity for a community to come together and celebrate their accomplishments. Actors and show-biz people take Oscars far less seriously than critics do. Yes, an Oscar can be important to a career. Sure. But more often than not, no. You know why? Because show-biz is HARD, for EVERYONE. Nobody gives anyone jack-squat.

This year, however, there are some serious issues with who was nominated and who wasn’t.

THAT BEING SAID.

Over at Rogerebert.com, the writers were polled on the nominees, numbers tallied up, assignments handed out. You can check out the Table of Contents here. Two nominee-essays will launch every day this week, written by the different writers over at Rogerebert.com.

What I’ve written on hasn’t launched yet, but the writers over there are so good and diverse it’s fun to read everyone. My friend Odie and I were talking about how wondering who is going to write about what is funner than the Oscars themselves.

So keep an eye on that Table of Contents link!
