He&#8217;s so good for acting classes, both his plays, his screenplays, and his TV scripts. Great scenes throughout, high peaks of emotion, good characters to delve into. Extremely Freudian, but that&#8217;s part of the era of writing he hails from.<\/p>\n<p>The Paul Schmidt translation of Chekhov\u2019s plays: <i><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0060928751\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=0060928751&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=thesheivari-20&#038;linkId=957d35c69bc8c79c8079660a20a07543\">The Plays of Anton Chekhov<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=thesheivari-20&#038;l=am2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0060928751\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/><\/i>: I prefer his translation to all the others. <\/p>\n<p>My battered copy of <i><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0156935600\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=0156935600&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=thesheivari-20&#038;linkId=b31d482839ebc3e18d11824d6fb4980f\">Virginia: A Play<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=thesheivari-20&#038;l=am2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0156935600\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/><\/i>, which I understudied in Chicago. I understudied both female roles &#8211; Vita Sackville-West AND Virginia. I actually got to go on multiple times. Truly nerve-wracking (I went into a phone booth near Wrigley Field and called into my answering service, and heard the director calmly telling me I would be going on as Virginia in a week for a week of performances. I literally almost pissed my pants.) It was an unbelievably rewarding experience. <\/p>\n<p><i><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0140436332\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=0140436332&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=thesheivari-20&#038;linkId=4a1905904526d47bd546e9551a43acdd\">Christopher Marlowe: The Complete Plays<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=thesheivari-20&#038;l=am2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0140436332\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/><\/i>: I\u2019ve been meaning to re-read the complete works of Marlowe one of these days. Nobody like him. Last year I re-read all of Shakespeare\u2019s stuff in chronological order (my second time doing that: I highly recommend it) and it made me think it would be fun to do the same thing with Marlowe, whose plays I love but don\u2019t know as well. <\/p>\n<p>Arthur Miller\u2019s <i><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0140481621\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=0140481621&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=thesheivari-20&#038;linkId=b1a0e4fbe9d8e45d69cae80a5142c258\">After the Fall<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=thesheivari-20&#038;l=am2&#038;o=1&#038;a=0140481621\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/><\/i> was my thesis at The Actors Studio, put on at Circle in the Square downtown. One of my favorite lines in any script ever is from <i>Awake and Sing<\/i> and it\u2019s pure Odets: \u201cBaby, don\u2019t gimme ice when your heart\u2019s on fire!\u201d You MUST mean this when you say it.
