Tonight is the series finale of Supernatural<\/i>. I have so many mixed feelings. I just re-watched the first two episodes of the series this past week and had an almost dissociative sense of how much the series has changed its stripes. I can’t think of another example, of a series that started one way and then just completely switched genres\/moods 3\/4s of the way through? Like, X-Files<\/i> was recognizably X-Files<\/i>, up until the end. So, too, E.R.<\/i> E.R.<\/i> didn’t suddenly morph into an adorable teenage-driven sitcom halfway through. But Supernatural<\/i> began as a show in the horror genre – and now is a “fantasy” show. I was thinking about this and even 4, 5 seasons ago, there were still those horror elements. “Red Meat.” “Into the Mystic.” “Alex Annie Anna whatever …” “Just My Imagination”. Whimsical and yet … horror. Now? The show is completely unmoored without its grounding source of inspiration. Like, what inspires it now? Low-rent Harry Potter<\/i> morphed with Hunger Games<\/i>? It HAS no “inspiration”. That’s why they’re like “oh whatever, we can do whatever we want with this material because there are no ground rules.” <\/p>\n

Anyway, I’ve complained enough. <\/p>\n

Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, young men when they started, middle-aged men now, have devoted the majority of their careers to this show – to these characters – and for that I will always be very grateful. <\/p>\n

Fearful of the finale. I don’t even know what it would mean, in this environment, to “stick” the landing. They’ve lost so much ground over the years. Either way, though, I’m here for it. <\/p>\n
