\nIt’s Women Writers Week over on Ebert (Table of Contents<\/a>), and I wrote about the biopic with which I measure all other biopics: Stanley Kwan\u2019s Center Stage<\/i><\/a> about the brief intense life of \u201cthe Chinese Greta Garbo,\u201d silent film star Ruan Lingyu, with Maggie Cheung giving a brilliant performance as Ruan (she won Best Actress at the 1992 Berlinake). <\/p>\n I saw Center Stage<\/i> in 1995 at the Music Box in Chicago and it has loomed in my mind ever since (since then, it\u2019s been difficult to track down). <\/p>\n There\u2019s now a gorgeous 4K restoration from the negative print and it\u2019s screening at @metrograph starting today<\/a>. Don\u2019t miss it. For me it\u2019s the high watermark of biopics.
