Episode 4 could be called “The Orgasm, Part 2.” The two episodes are laid out like a thesis paper: episode 3 presents the thesis, episode 4 breaks it down and comes to conclusions. On my first watch, I obviously picked up on Hannah and Garrett’s respective traumas, even if I didn’t know precise details. The flashbacks are handled artfully and intelligently, and I never got the sense the show was using trauma to manipulate the audience or artificially raise the stakes. Even though I put the pieces together, I couldn’t have anticipated episodes 3 and 4 (or, episode 5, come to think of it).

I started this recap and kept talking about episode 4, a sign of how interconnected the episodes are, more so than the rest of the season.

I was unfamiliar with the work of director Samantha Bailey, even though she’s been nominated for an Emmy for Brown Girls. She’s been working semi-steadily since 2016. I say “semi” because she’s been a regular director on a couple of series, but hired for only a couple of episodes, and there are some years where she only has one or two credits. She’s only been in the business for 10 years. Based on her work in episodes 3 and 4, I would assume she was a veteran of many decades. Bailey is phenomenally talented and assured, and I am blown away. The most challenging episodes of the series, that require the most deft and delicate handling, are eps 3 and 4. She does not make one wrong move. These episodes address very heavy subjects, and episode 4 contains a 20-minute-long scene where Hannah, with Garrett, directly confronts her trauma from the rape. A 20-minute scene in one location between two people is so rare as to be almost unheard-of, particularly in television, particularly in our short-attention-span streaming universe.

Episode 4 could have been handled so poorly. I’ll get to that in the next recap. But Bailey took charge, wrangled the team together, getting everyone on the same page. I’d say that the main job of a director is getting everyone on the same page. Team effort, yes, but Samantha Bailey was in charge. I think she should be nominated for an Emmy for her work on episode 4. She was open with the actors about her own trauma, and her experiences with dissociation, and this was very important. Hannah dissociating is addressed openly in episode 4, although we can already see it a little bit in the fantasies, where dissociation pulls her out of it. Whether or not the actors had first-hand experience in this area is irrelevant. Sensitive work was done so they both understood what it was, how it presents.

Episodes 3 and 4 were the hook for me, mainly because I couldn’t even believe what I was watching. I couldn’t believe it worked so well. Episode 4 is very sexy, with a sex scene more intimate than most sex scenes ever are … and there’s no nudity. By the end of episode 4 we are in the clear. Radical. There are four episodes to go. What complications will arise to RUIN the Eden they discovered?

Episode 3 has an overall air of whimsy and humor, placed over the obviously serious issues bubbling up. Allie is excited about her career, and her boyfriend Sean is the opposite of supportive. Allie, heartbroken, is torn about what to do. She’s so in love with Sean. (But is she? Really? Or does she just think she should be?) Allie falls apart, but in often amusing ways. Hannah and Garrett are busy working on their deal. Hannah is helping Garrett study, and it’s difficult, because 1. he hooks up with someone during a study appointment (oh Garrett) and 2. Kierkegaard is riding his last nerve, and he doesn’t understand the concepts. Simultaneously, Hannah and Justin have started to collaborate on Hannah’s pop song for the “pop showcase” (oh THIS old chestnut), and the collaboration is going well, even though Hannah is so awkward you don’t know how she even gets through a conversation. Justin is open to her suggestions, he provides some insight into his process (which will come up in the final episode, even though it’s never explicitly acknowledged.

My two cents: I think Hannah interprets her nervousness around Justin for “chemistry”, when, in reality, it’s a mix of whatever the OPPOSITE of chemistry is, and a message from her trauma bubbling up from her unconscious: “Uhm, you have to deal with me sooner or later.” Nervousness like this isn’t necessarily a good sign. Maybe there’s someone safe and comforting nearby, Hannah. Not this anti-chemistry epic void filled with nervous laughter. Agonizing.

Hannah has no experience with chemistry. This was robbed from her when she was raped in high school. She’s not just going to move on, have crushes on people, date them, hook up … or, she has done all these things, but has a hard time with the experience. Her trauma response (the fight-flight-freeze, the claw hands) is always ready to ambush her. (I think a weekly phone call with her therapist Carole would help her navigate all this.) So she can’t have a crush on Justin without immediately thinking about her “problem”. These two things are already collapsed into one. (I hate it when two separate things become one thing.) She can’t enjoy crushing or flirting because … what happens if it goes further? Boom: trauma ambush. Even her sexual fantasies aren’t safe. Her sexual fantasies include Justin asking her, with some judgment, “Can you?” (meaning: Can you even have an orgasm? Because it doesn’t seem like you can. Yeah, that’s not sexy.) Episode 3 establishes all of this, and we need all of it for episode 4.

The subject matter is grim – Hannah basically coming to terms with the impact left on her by being raped – but the handling of the subject matter is NOT grim. I’ll get into why I think this is so successful when we get to those moments. In his three-part essay “The Crack-Up”, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote that the problem for him as a writer began when he started viewing tragic events tragically, as opposed to viewing tragic events comedically, ironically, satirically. I have never forgotten this and always try to keep it in mind as a writer. Off Campus handles grim subject matter but does so with warmth, intelligence, humor, creating a kind of hope that is quite touching and almost wholesome, while not being Pollyanna-lalaland. The characters’ attempts to face what scares them, to open up to someone, to let themselves be seen … is touching and human. The show leaves space for the messiness of these interactions. You can have tragic things happen TO you but you don’t have to view your life AS a tragedy.

At the end of episode 2, Garrett and Hannah lay on the floor on both sides of the bed, and Garrett opened up about his childhood, he asked her about her music. Undeniable trust and friendship is growing. Garrett, at least, has fallen. He told her things he’s never told a soul. Hell, he told her things he’s never told anyone at the end of episode 1. He’s INTO her.

Having Garrett “fall first” allows him to move with intention, even when he pulls back out of self-preservation or sheer confusion. He’s never been in this situation before. In stories like this, the lead characters often waste a lot of time questioning themselves, like “Why do I like THIS girl who’s not my status?” “What will my friends say?” “Can I accept his small-town life? Won’t I miss the Big City?” Whatever. Garrett wastes no time with this stuff. The interrupted hookup with Zoe (Sabrina Larsen) doesn’t have to do with feelings, because here we are, it’s only episode 3, and Garrett feels – at least inside, to himself – like he is Hannah’s boyfriend. He acts like her boyfriend. He’s not even trying to hide it, from her or from himself. He stands really close to her, leaning on a lamppost or whatever, enclosing her in his space. Like, come on. He’s hurt when she reschedules on him. He’s bothered by her interest in Justin. He has somehow created a situation where he – the sexpot whom every girl wants – has CHOSEN to Friendzone himSELF.

Consider this: he asks her to join him and his boys for karaoke night. Great! This is an event Justin won’t be attending. Jules already put Hannah and Garrett on the stupid Fifth Line account. Jules no longer needs to be “convinced”. There’s nothing to prove at ALL at karaoke night. It’s a date, straight-up. Hannah isn’t aware she is on a date, but Garrett is. His behavior on the date – including the final moment when he tucks drunk Hannah in bed without touching her – is world-class. Hannah, unfortunately, despite what he feels, is not his girlfriend, hate to break it to you. But … things are getting a little confusing.

Episode 3 is a swirl of confusion, where fantasy becomes indistinguishable from reality, where inner thoughts and outer voices are in conflict … where Hannah’s unconscious is telling her in no uncertain terms what is going on, and she’s trying to navigate reality while basically going in and out of a fugue state of fantasies. The fantasies are interesting though. She fantasizes about Justin. She fantasizes about Justin who then transforms into Garrett. Garrett strolls, uninvited, into Hannah’s fantasies.

Obviously, this shows Hannah is more attracted to Garrett, has more natural chemistry with Garrett, and now we just have to suffer patiently until she comes to this realization.

I can see the obvious interpretation of these fantasies. She’s into Garrett, not Justin. The fantasies are interesting: they express desire but she can’t release. The energy is stopped-up. This moves us into episode 4. We may think this is all about Justin, and how she’s torn between Justin and Garrett. I don’t think so.

I feel it’s even more obvious that these fantasies show something deeper – and darker. Remember the title of episode 3 is “The Orgasm”. She can’t “get there”. Is it only because she wants Garrett and not Justin? No. The problem exists with or without Garrett OR Justin. She says to Garrett in episode 4, “I haven’t been able to orgasm with a guy.” She also says she can do it on her own, no problem. (I have my doubts on that score, actually. She’s having trouble throughout the episode.) I think she is ready to finally face this problem with another human, a man in the room with her. Maybe she thinks it will be Justin, but I don’t think so. I think she knows: Garrett’s gotta help me with this. Look how much he helped me yesterday.

Her frustrated sexual fantasies end in one of two ways: Garrett asks, sexily, “What do you want, Wellsy?” Justin asks, doubtfully, “Can you?” Her choice is obvious.

(There’s a moment I like in the book. The morning after karaoke, Hannah wakes him up, asks if he is “100% awake” and then asks him to have sex with her. She doesn’t say “give me an orgasm”. He is confused, and thinks it’s a prank. lol She is mortified and almost in tears, he’s not taking her seriously – and this pushes her down the shame spiral: only she would proposition a man for sex – SEX – and be turned down. She can’t do anything right, etc. Garrett notices her emotions but he cannot for the life of him figure out what’s going on. He says, “What’s wrong. Let me try to help.” She says, “I asked you for help and you turned me down.” This doesn’t clear anything up for Garrett, who says, totally at sea, “You didn’t ask me for help. You asked me to fuck you.” Hannah you are going to need to lay this out very specifically for him.)

To some, it might be unbelievable that at this point Hannah doesn’t realize it’s Garrett she likes. But to me, it makes perfect sense, and to understand this you need to understand trauma. I ended up writing a massive tome about episode 4, and my feelings of connection to it, not required reading, I’ll put it at the bottom of the episode 4 re-cap. I want to make it clear I do not think my feeling of connection is unique. So many people feel “seen” by episode 4. Figured I’d just add my voice to the chorus. I think Garrett feels safe to Hannah because she is NOT “into” him – or doesn’t think she is – and does NOT think of him as a boyfriend. The thought of hooking up with Justin puts her into a panic spiral (she can’t even leave the panic out of her fantasies), and she is interpreting this as lust and anticipation because, remember, she has never had an authentic and free experience of lust, desire, arousal, anything. She doesn’t know it when it’s right in front of her. She’s like: Whatever. Garrett is safe. He’ll walk through me it. Everything will be fine.

Being trustworthy, part 1

Garrett has never had a girlfriend. Hannah has never had a boyfriend. (She did in the book, but he’s not referenced in the series, so we’re just going to focus on what’s in the series). Garrett has made a big point of saying he doesn’t “do” girlfriends. He tells Kendall in episode 1 that he’s too busy, he can only “offer casual”. Okay. Well. That’s fine. But literally three days later you’re swooning over Hannah’s Instagram. I’m just saying. He never says out loud WHY he doesn’t “do” girlfriends, but it’s deeper than his busy schedule (it usually is. As a good friend said to me years ago, when I mentioned how the guy I was into was “busy”, “Nope. He’s not into you. If he was into you, he’d make time.” It hurt but she was right and I never forgot it.) There were clues in that scene with Kendall – the way he was honestly confused she would want him as a boyfriend – “Why?” He doesn’t get it, and not just because they really don’t know each other. Why would she want to date him? What on earth does he bring to the table for anyone? His cocky persona is designed to hide everything else, including his deepest rooted fear that he will be like his dad.

This is laid out very clearly in episode 5, but the issues are evident from the start, even if we aren’t sure how to interpret them. He watched his mother be abused. He then lost her. He himself was violently abused. He would take beatings himself so dad wouldn’t go after mom. This is dark stuff (and described with much more detail in the book. Garrett’s dad didn’t just hit him. He beat the hell out of him. Broke his nose multiple times. I do wish the show had been more definite on this point). Garrett has carried guilt about not being able to protect his mother. There’s a reason Hannah’s vulnerability touches him, brings out a protector in him. Why he glows when she kisses him on the cheek at the party, after he hands her the can of beer. He felt like a failure as a protector because he couldn’t protect his mom. He’s avoiding ever being in that situation again. He’s not protecting anyone. But suddenly he wants to be there for Hannah in that way. I don’t think any of this is happening on a conscious level, but Belmont is playing these undercurrents.

One of the big moments in episode 3 is Garrett asking Hannah at karaoke, “Do you trust me?” This will come up again in episode 4, when he tells Dean he is not sure he’s the guy who should be trusted with this big “thing”. Garrett does not think he is trustworthy. In episode 7, when he says to Hannah, “Do you not trust me?” he is devastated. Garrett is emotionally regulated – to some degree and in some circumstances – but he pays a price for it. (In the book, Garrett says something about knowing he has a temper but working all the time to never give in to it. Good job! But suppression comes with its own problems.) He avoids getting involved, keeps everyone at arms’ length. He has no idea IF he will be able to protect Hannah. After all, he wasn’t able to protect his mom. Incidentally, his experience with Hannah shows the limits of “protection” as well. Sometimes you feel protective towards someone who doesn’t want that from you.

He puts himself through a couple of little tests in the second half of episode 3. Initially, it SEEMS like they’re tests for Hannah “Do you trust me to watch your drinks for you and look out for you?” But really … he’s testing himself. He tells her it will be okay for her to drink, he’ll make sure she’s safe. Later, when she’s drunk and he’s not, he puts her to bed, even though she wants to have sex with him. Not an easy thing to resist, but he does without hesitation. You know he’s tempted but it’s obvious he never considers giving into it. So these are tests, for himself. If he fucked her, he would know he could never be trusted. He’s trying to be better.

A week ago he couldn’t believe Kendall would want him as a boyfriend. Now he’s trying to be a good version of himself … for Hannah. He passes the tests with flying green-flag colors. He gets it now. He understands the responsibility of “being there” for someone, but also … it feels GOOD to be trusted. (This is explicit in the book. In the book, at karaoke night, Garrett stands outside the bathroom while Hannah goes in. He told her he would. Before Hannah opens the door, a little drunk, she says to him, “You won’t let anything bad happen to me, will you?” Out of nowhere, Garrett almost starts to cry. He failed to protect his mother. He didn’t know he’d be good at this. He also didn’t know how good it would feel to protect someone. How could he?)

Garrett grew up loving a woman who was being abused. He’s sensitive to this stuff. It makes him sensitive to Hannah, too. If you think about it, if his mother died when he was a baby, instead of when he was 12 or 13, and he had never had that time with her … imagine how worse off he would have been. The goodness in him comes from his mother, who loved him, whose strength he remembers, who kept her love of music and movies intact, and passed on that love to her son, and etc. and etc. Whatever good memories he has in his childhood is because of her. He lost his only protector, and now here he is positioning himself as a protector. He “failed” to protect his mother (according to him. Of course he couldn’t have protected her. He was a child.) He carries guilt. Deciding to be a trustworthy person for Hannah is a big big deal, and potentially triggering for Garrett.

These are good things to keep in mind as we watch him navigate NOT being her boyfriend even though he clearly IS (in his own mind).

None of this is said out loud in a monologue. It’s just the unspoken resonance beneath his character, all of which is in Belmont’s sensitive un-pushed performance. Garrett doesn’t even really know what’s happening – not really – he’s just going with Hannah by instinct, by feel. Once he starts doing something that is HIS alone, doing it because he wants to … he literally can’t make a wrong move. He didn’t know this about life. He had no idea.

If Hannah resists getting involved because it will dredge up all this stuff from the rape, then Garrett resists getting involved because … what the hell kind of male role model did he have? Later, we’ll learn how scared he is of becoming his father. He has never told anyone. It is his worst most hidden secret.

Episode 2 some observations, the “how” of it all

I might have “bought” Hannah and Justin’s steamy makeout sesh was actually happening if they weren’t in the music room where there is an entire glass wall looking out onto a courtyard. She’s taking her shirt off? There? I like how the fantasies show where Hannah is at: it starts with her playing the piano, a Janelle Monae song she turns to “when I’m stuck.” When you’re “stuck” … creatively. I got it. Then there’s a dreamy moment where they play the piano together, the ultimate turn-on for Hannah. But … somewhere … she can’t really “go” with that, and instead – in her mind – makes her mess up slightly, confessing “You make me nervous.” Being nervous has to be incorporated into the fantasy, because Hannah is realistic enough to know she will be nervous IF and WHEN … It might be a fantasy but it has to be REAL. Interestingly, she grabs onto Justin’s belt buckle, pulling him towards her. the way she pulled on Garrett’s shirt in the weight room, the way Garrett pulled on her waistband in episode 1. She liked Garrett doing it, so she tried it herself with Garrett. Now she’s trying it again with Justin in her fantasy. Garrett’s in the fantasy even if he’s not actually present. And of course, once they start kissing, the clothes must come off immediately, because … well, she has class in half an hour and we have to cut to the chase. But then, reality seeps in, she sees through the matrix, and … the worst … she’s assuring Justin she “can do this” and he asks, filled with doubt: “Can you?” Haunting.

It’s kind of amazing that even with this opening scene, even with the episode title, people respond to her request closing out the episode with: “Where did THAT come from??!” I am speaking of some YouTube reactors. The double reflection of them in the grand piano has a dreamy quality. (Speaking of which: episode 3 has a LOT of creative mirror moments. (Mirror moments in cinema is a pet interest of mine, I even created an entire Instagram account for mirror moments in cinema.) Mirrors are used to add visual interest to rooms, but on a psychological level – mirrors are often used to give us access to a character’s inner thoughts, OR to show the character trying/failing to put on a public mask. Mirrors are also used for moments when a character, alone, grapples with themselves. Episode 3 is about a character looking directly into her soul and seeing what’s there while also avoiding the same thing because she’s afraid. Mirror moments were made for storylines like this! The struggle is within. I don’t think, actually, the struggle is really about Justin vs. Garrett. I think it’s with herself, and whether or not she is ready to face the orgasm problem and actually do something about it.
The opening camera move starts with a closeup of her hands playing the keys, before slowing moving up to her face. She seems to be alone, but then Justin moves forward, coming into view. He’s been beside her the whole time. Another dreamy effect, cluing us in this might not be real. Notice they’re wearing shirts almost the same color. These are beautiful subtle details, helping to present what is (supposedly) a straight-forward creative session as something “other” than what it is.

The music cues, looping together the masturbation/sexual-fantasy scenes, are perfectly placed and chosen. This is a serious issue, humorously presented, not a tragic event presented tragically. We don’t even know what’s going ON until episode 4, but we can make a pretty good guess. In these sequences, the music sounds on the verge of exploding or coalescing, but instead the tune hovers, mischievously, in the same spot, with little variations up and down. When she goes into the second fantasy, it’s actually funny! Here we go again … There’s more sexual frankness in this episode than you normally get. Amazon has connected Liquid IV to the narrative: Liquid IV want Garrett to do a campaign with his dad and Garrett turned them down. Fine. But the Liquid IV product placement gets more and more obvious as the series goes on. Someone should have said “No” to Liquid IV or at least put their foot down about some of it. The most egregious example comes later in the episode. Jules becomes the Liquid IV spokesperson multiple times, which makes me think Jules was invented to sing the praises of Liquid IV. The vibe in the room is “off” and Garrett is getting twitchy on the couch when talking about his dad. He’s so blunt and clear: “No amount of money is worth” doing an ad campaign with his father. Jules’ response is to ask him how much money was offered, before calling Garrett a “nepo”. You spend all your time in the house, Jules, where the nepo probably pays the majority of the rent. Jules and John bicker over Garrett’s head, and John tries to rein Jules in. Someone needs to rein them both in. I get it, Garrett is rich, Jules and John are poor, but if you can’t hide your resentment while the man is just sitting there reading flashcards on the couch, then … you all are not good friends. Why is no one picking up on Garrett’s twitchy behavior? Not everyone wants to experiment with sex positions, but his response to Allie’s news that she got an agent is unforgivable. “I thought you’d join me in Vermont after graduation, my family’s insurance business …” I think the show lays it on a bit thick, and this muddies the waters. Sean is so irredeemable here that her later worry about “hurting”, which impacts her relationship with Dean, does not make sense. If Sean were a little less openly assholic, there might be more nuance in the presentation. If he had been open like, “Can we talk about how this will work because I am not sure I want to do long distance …” it would have humanized him. Because these things do happen with couples, especially in the hermetically sealed world of college. You grow apart. You’re about to go out in the world. I remember telling my first boyfriend I was headed to New York to do the big regional auditions for summer stock theatres. He went very still, his jaw got a little tight (I learned to dread the tight jaw), and he said, “So you’d go away for the whole summer?” “Yeah. It’s summer stock.” I’m a theatre major. I am not sure who you THOUGHT you were dating.
At least my boyfriend didn’t say to me, “What are the odds of you actually making it?” as Sean does, following it up with the even worse, “I thought you’d outgrow all this.”
A terrible stricken look comes into Allie’s face. She looks hurt, but she also looks afraid. This is the worst thing anyone can ever say to anyone who has a dream.

One more thought: Later in the episode, Garrett does his oral exam, pontificating on Kierkegaard’s possible view of “ghosting”. After a shaky start, Garrett locks in, saying that when you ghost someone you dehumanize them. “It is an absolute abdication of selfhood.” When Sean says “I thought you’d outgrow all this”, he dehumanizes Allie, her deepest goals and desires, he abdicates her SELF.

The Logan-crushing-on-Hannah arc continues. The arc is strangely disconnected from the main narrative. The drama exists solely in Logan’s mind, and only Jules notices. As of now, Logan is suspicious of what is going on between Hannah and Garrett… and he’s not wrong. The relationship is not “real”, not yet. But if Garrett is his best friend, why does he think Garrett is up to no good? Isn’t he your friend? If you think he’s a sketchy asshole, then why are you his friend?
Hannah shows up, in her pink bike helmet, and then follows a perfectly friendly conversation where we learn Logan fixed Hannah’s car freshman year. This is when Logan first “noticed” her, so we’re talking three years ago. Logan, you never made a move!
Hannah is perfectly friendly, and the two of them have a nice dynamic, although Logan ruins it with a dig at Garrett. “We can’t all be Garrett Graham.”
To be clear: I actually like that Logan is complicated, that he’s being messy. It’s real, and true to the book. I feel like Off Campus didn’t develop it fully, didn’t give us Logan’s perspective, didn’t give us a scene where he shared with a friend (not Jules, who mocks him for his crush). We could have benefited from Logan Introspection. Saying “it’ll be in season 2” is not good enough. Set it up now. For those who hadn’t read the book, we don’t care what’s in the book. We have to read the information we are given, and Logan crushing endlessly and only talking to his sibling about it goes on for far too long.

Logan knows what Garrett is doing in his room and doesn’t warn Hannah. (In the book, all the guys in the house call out to her, “Don’t go up there right now!”)

Let’s talk about Anthony Cipriano a little bit. Cipriano’s voice is soft and soothing. You can tell he is a singer. Let’s celebrate the beauty of his voice. He’s been successful in musicals. He participates in group shows at 54 Below. I’m hoping the fame brought by Off Campus could kick it to another level. Like … a solo Christmas album? An album of show tunes or duets? He and his partner Justine Verheul created a production company. Verheul choreographs high school theatre productions. So cool! Cipriano plays on the Broadway softball league. I looked around for clips of him singing, and found a couple. His instrument is extraordinary.

Duet with Justine Verheul:

Very

Hannah bursts into the room, takes one look at the tableau before her, and screams, “OHHHH MY GOD”, and then just stands there, staring. The awkwardness and tension COULD be read as “sexual” but I don’t think it is. Hannah lingers in moments, almost creating awkwardness. How does Justin feel about Hannah? Is Justin real, in any way? Does he like her or desire her? Not clear. (To be clear, heh, it’s fine that it’s not clear.)
A moment of real connection comes in their exchange about sound effects in song mixes. He tells her he records sounds of trees or wind, the clinking of cups and plates in Malone’s and sometimes he will use it “deep in the mix”. Hannah is fascinated and inspired. Billie and Finneas do this! Love the Sharon Van Etten name drop! This is a nice moment of connection, but its real function is how it connects to episode 8, when she finally writes her gosh-dern pop song. She uses hockey sounds deep in the mix. I like this! She doesn’t reference Justin when she does this, but we remember – or we should – this early discussion. Their collaboration did provide some inspiration.

The music choice for Hannah’s freakout is “Scatterbrained”, and the lyrics are perfect.
“Some people pay for therapy
I find it in the sheets”

I don’t care if she’s fantasizing about Logan or Oscar the Grouch, things are getting uncomfortable. Everyone has to ask and answer it on some level.

Dean asks Allie “What do you want?” in almost every scene they have together.

Hannah makes sure Garrett really wants to go home for Thanksgiving. He should give his dad a second chance only if he wants to.

Beau and Dean face this question in the emergency-crisis meeting Dean calls. Dean is flustered, and to Beau the answer is clear. It’s obvious to Beau what Dean wants. Whether or not Dean will get it is another story. But you have to at least ADMIT what you WANT, you with the Daddy T-shirt.

A key line from Allie comes in episode 6, as she freaks out at the fund raiser about Dean, who seems to have no doubts about anything. “God, it’s so hot when people know what they want.”

Unfortunately, Logan does not have a moment when he grapples with this question. Maybe it’ll come in season 2, but I reiterate: we needed it in season 1 too.

The answer to “What do you want?” sometimes screams at you in the face. One of the frustrations with Allie and Dean is that Allie knows what she wants, but puts herself through the wringer, judging herself for her own wants. Famous actress lady in episode 7 doesn’t help, putting wants in Allie’s head that aren’t actually there. We’ve already seen Allie having trouble stating – or even knowing – what she wants.

Fantasy Garrett asking Hannah “What do you want?” … twice … whispers in Hannah’s ear throughout the episode, and in the episode’s final moment she’s made up her mind. Now it’s Garrett who’s in the dark, who has no idea what’s going on in Hannah’s mind, he’s too scared he will “get” Kirkegaard in the upcoming exam (when we see how the exam is set up we’ll understand what he means). It’s insane.

You get your grade immediately after taking the test?

Garrett picks Hannah up multiple times over the course of the series, including the culminating moment in episode 5 when they re-create the book cover. It gets a little repetitive. We get it, you’re a giant, she’s wee. Him lifting her up doesn’t work for me here, but maybe you can justify the lift if you think of it as: he wants to pick her up all the time, as he will do repeatedly later, only at this moment it’s WAY too soon. Garrett is two episodes ahead of himself in his own timeline. I think a hug would have been nicer. A big warm hug!

Even with the sexual fantasies, Hannah is still Justin-focused. Garrett is not confused about his feelings for Hannah. This is surprising! Usually there’s more confusion in these fake-dating stories. Hannah treats Garrett like a trusted friend, an older brother, and she appears to have no idea he has feelings for her. To be fair, she did walk in on Garrett eating someone out yesterday. Hannah has never been in a relationship, and has not experienced kindness from men. Garrett presents himself as a safe person to talk to. I don’t think even HE has realized the power of that, the change that “being safe” and “being trusted” will bring about for HIM. So far, he has not asked for any advice. Nobody gives Garrett advice, until Dean steps into the spotlight in episode 4. Garrett is acting on instinct, because he actually CARES about Hannah, AND … he’s never been in a relationship before either.

Why is Justin waving at her while she is being twirled around in the air by Garrett? Are these two “dating” or not? And if they are or aren’t, trying to grab her attention WHILE some hot hockey player holds her up is bizarre. Both Garrett and Justin are “stars” in their worlds. Justin is used to being desired – he has fans – and so is Garrett. I like the positioning of Justin as a star in his world, Garrett a star in his. Still, Justin never seems like a credible threat to Garrett. To be fair, he seems even less of a credible threat in the book, where he barely registers. In the book, Justin is a football player whom Hannah barely speaks to, and in her head she has turned him into the most beautiful kind sensitive man ever. She’s John Logan: this is all in her mind. Hannah is very high-school-ish about Justin: Hannah hasn’t really “developed” after what happened to her. I love how we are in episode 3: this behavior feels like it should still be fake on Garrett’s part, put on “display” for Justin’s benefit, but Garrett stopped pretending ages ago. Like, two days ago.

Garrett asks her to come out “with me and the guys” for karaoke. Garrett frames the invite as a way to make Justin wait. There is no reason for them to go out if they aren’t displaying themselves for Justin. Garrett knows what he’s doing here, and Hannah doesn’t. This is an interesting dynamic, and I suggest it’s why Hannah has to be the one to make the grand romantic gesture at the end of episode 4. It’s Hannah who has to take the risk. Usually in these stories it’s the guy who has to take the risk and declare himself: he runs to the airport, serenades beneath a window, bursts into the press conference. The guy is usually slower to “get it”. Here, it’s Hannah who’s not getting it. Good storytelling choice.

Garrett: “Hey. Fangirl. He’s testing Hannah, too, but the more interesting deeper choice is testing himself as a person to be trusted. Cameli’s approach to this potentially very tricky moment is delicate, like fine needlework or pointillist painting or something. Super delicate, small, no big strokes. You have to get the moment just right. His expression is soft and kind, and yet what he says is so bold. It takes a LOT of balls for Garrett to propose what he does.

He does not know the story behind Hannah’s rule about drinking. Garrett does not ask Hannah why she doesn’t like to drink in public, and this is very important. Garrett’s instincts are correct, when he stops to consider what to do and how to do it. He knows, intuitively, he shouldn’t tell Dean that “the girl” is Hannah (even though Dean guesses), and he also knows he shouldn’t tell Hannah’s story to anyone, even if it will seriously help him (like in episode 7). He keeps her secret. The “why” is none of his business. In the book, Garrett spends time thinking about this moment beforehand. He doesn’t propose the idea spur-of-the-moment. He goes in with a plan. I think the same is true for the Garrett in the series. He went into karaoke night wanting to propose this.

Garrett has no idea what he is walking into and has no idea what her reaction might be. It’s a big risk. Imagine how this moment could have sounded in less fine-needlework hands: “Go ahead! Have a drink! Let loose!”

The fact that Garrett gives himself this test says a lot about his character. I wrote about this in my last re-cap: Garrett and Hannah are strong as a couple because they made a commitment to the “deal”, as half-assed as they carry it out. Their bond started as a commitment from before they started dating. They already have each others’ backs.

Garrett knows if Hannah says “yes” it will be a huge deal. Why is it so important to him that she trust him? Well, obviously, he’s madly in love with her. But still: even if he’s not fully conscious of the “why” of it, he wants to be “worthy” of her. He doesn’t know why she doesn’t feel safe sometimes but he wants her to know HE is a safe person. Garrett grew up in an unsafe house. This test with Hannah is a first step on the road towards being able to say, “I don’t want to be like my dad.”

Probably important to underline: he has never, in his life, felt or done any of these things before.

The soft part of him went underground when his mother died.

Trust is such an important concept in Off Campus. In episode 5, Phil Graham pleads with Garrett to come home for Thanksgiving, saying, “I don’t expect you to understand this but Cindy has chosen to trust me and I want to be worthy of that trust.”

I didn’t pick up on the narcissism of “I don’t expect you to understand” on a first watch. For the past month, Garrett has been doing the exact same thing, trying to be worthy of Hannah’s trust. And, unlike Phil Graham, he’s ACTUALLY been doing it. Hannah choosing to trust him has been one of the most revelatory things that’s ever happened to Garrett. In episode 4’s now-iconic weight room scene with Dean, Garrett says (and it’s hard for him to say, he’s touching on a deep fear): “I don’t know if I’m the kind of guy she should be trusting this with.” Dean’s answer is perfect: “She asked you. She thinks you are.”

These lying manipulative words from Phil connect, subliminally, to this earlier moment. Asking Hannah if she wants to have a drink, letting her know he will keep her safe, be there to protect her so she can let loose and not be worried, promising he “will look after Allie” as well … all of this is Garrett’s test for himself. He wants to be a safe harbor for someone, and (daker), he was unable to protect his mom, but maybe he can protect Hannah. It’s huge.

I must point out again: Belmont Cameli doesn’t PLAY it like it’s huge. He plays it soft and gentle and kind because he understands Garrett doesn’t want to scare Hannah off or make the moment about him.

While I would not recommend any woman hand over trust to a man in regards to drinking – not even Garrett Graham – the sequence of Hannah trying drinks at the bar, with Garrett supporting her, is adorable. I imagine it would be difficult to get this little section right. Handled poorly, it would look like Garrett is pushing drinks on her. The actors are great, but good actors can be sunk by sloppy directing or sloppy story-telling. The revelation here is akin to what I’ll talk about in the next re-cap: Pleasure is so important. Pleasure is innocent. When bad things happen to us, we protect ourselves, and our capacity to feel pleasure – not just sexual – is impacted. I used to write a lot about this, how I would try to comparmentalize the bitterness I felt in one area of my life. I didn’t want the bitterness to bleed out into everything. Compartmentalization is not possible, at least not without doing real damage to the other “compartments”. Drink or don’t drink, it’s up to you, but Garrett creates a space where Hannah can feel pleasure and still feel safe.

The only false note in the line to the ladies room where Allie is babbling about Sean dissing her dreams is that 9 times out of 10, the girls in line would hype Allie up. I’m sure your mom wants you to be happy and you will not be happy in Vermont. I have to give her grace because Allie is, what, 20 years old? 21? It takes time sometimes to sort things out, to separate yourself from your parents. If I could go back in time to the summer before my senior year of college, I would tiptoe up to my 21-year-old self, laughing at a lobster bake on the beach, and whisper, “Okay, so I know you just lost your virginity to that guy over there, and congratulations, but I advise you keep this a summer fling. He’s going back to law school in a couple weeks, so just say ‘thanks for a great summer’ and do NOT, I BEG OF YOU, become his long-distance girlfriend. In a matter of 2 and a half years, you will be living in a van with him driving around the continent, wishing you had never been born.” But … I was 21. I wouldn’t have listened. These are college kids NOW. Logan enters and … what a shock … is intercepted immediately at the door by Jules, who tells him what song he’ll be singing. (I wish he would sing, considering Cipriano’s pipes!) Jules points out Garrett and Hannah canoodling at the bar, Garrett is twirling a cocktail umbrella in Hannah’s face. Like, guys, what are we even doing anymore. I think Garrett is proud of himself for being the person who could create the safety zone around Hannah. Hannah is being silly and a little sloppy, clutching at Logan’s hand, being free and goofy, a whole other Hannah. (I wonder if Logan remembers the closed-can suggestion and then wonders why Hannah is drinking now. Is his friend forcing her to drink? I wouldn’t put it past Logan to assign a nefarious motive to Garrett!) We don’t have to suffer through the cliche of a girl who just “needs to come out of her shell”. No. Hannah has a trauma in her past, which impacts her desire to do certain things in public (and in private). (Not.) This series, this episode, this SCENE in particular, is very concerned about roofying and spiked drinks. To have Jules come up in THIS moment at the bar, holding a packet of Liquid IV, saying to Garrett, “You’re looking a little parched”, and then pouring the packet into Garrett’s glass of water – without his consent – is CRAZY. Nobody on set that day was like “Maybe we should re-think the handling of this particular product placement?” The first time I watched, I gasped, thinking Hannah would be triggered. I thought it was a “moment”. Nope. It was just the laziest most irresponsible product placement I’ve ever seen, undermining the entire message of the karaoke sequence. Granted, Jules’ entire character is there to keep Logan from having deep conversations with his friends and also to promote Liquid IV. In episode 8, she’s dressed head to toe in Liquid IV merch. I’m not mad at Liquid IV being advertised, Liquid IV put a lot of money into their Off Campus campaign – but did they have to show up in THIS moment? The issue is too important, to central to Off Campus. During a scene where Hannah – scared of being spiked – decides to drink, Jules strolls over and sprinkles something in Garrett’s drink. Garrett then has a whole moment where he takes a sip and says “This is really good.” The whole thing is GROSS.

“Nepo babies have feelings too.” Yes, Jules, they do, so maybe take them into consideration.

When Hannah heads off to sing her number, she hands her drink over to Garrett. Very good and also great acting can be done in a presentational mode. I am not prescriptive about acting techniques. Whatever gets you there. What matters is the result. Ella Bright is a more presentational kind of actor, and her work is touching and vulnerable, and she hits very few “wrong” notes (I think she over-plays the awkward nervous laugh, it’s really my only critique, and it’s super minor). Her performance is intelligent and deeply felt. It’s just that for me – as someone who has spent decades writing about acting styles, particularly acting in film – the other kind of work, the more slippery kind, the ambiguous on-the-edges mostly-left-unspoken kind of work is more interesting to explore as a writer. There’s more to discuss, especially when a moment isn’t just one thing, it’s multiple things.

Acting like this is MADE for the camera. The camera is a lie detector. The only thing you MUST not do in front of the camera is lie, or pretend that what you are doing is real even if you don’t believe it. The camera will find you out. Belief is key. Let’s say the script requires you to be deep in thought. Let’s say whatever it is the character is thinking about doesn’t really interest you, or you aren’t interested in it at that moment. You could PRETEND to be thinking what the character is thinking. This would be a bad choice because the camera will read the falsity. You could think about what you’re having for lunch that day: “Maybe I’ll have a tuna sandwich, although, wait, I had tuna yesterday, maybe I’ll just make a salad.” If you genuinely think this, to the camera it will “read” as true. The audience will project onto it. You have to be thinking SOMEthing.

You don’t even have to KNOW what you’re doing if you are connected to truth and interiority (the camera cares most about these things). My favorite example is in Casablanca’s famous “dueling anthems” scene, when Humphrey Bogart nods to the musicians, giving them permission to play “La Marseillaise”.

See him nod at the 1:06 mark:

The shot of Bogart nodding was an insert, filmed later, because director Michael Curtiz realized he needed it. They were running out of time, Curtiz didn’t have time to explain, he just told Bogart, in his incomprehensible accent, “Stand there and nod.” Bogart had no idea what Rick was nodding about. The nod, to Bogart, was context-less. But watch him nod. WE provide the context. Rick (Bogart) makes a big show of being apolitical. In this moment, Rick takes a side. In terms of acting and the camera – ultimately, it’s not important whether or not Bogart knew specifically what the moment was about. He nodded with conviction – I mean, look at him – and the end result brings goosebumps all over your body. It’s one of the most famous scenes in the history of cinema and Bogart didn’t know what he was nodding about, but he knew it was important so he gave it everything, Bogart-style.

The camera requires interior work, even if what you’re doing is a screwball comedy. Watch Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell banter in His Girl Friday. Highly stylized work, rapid-fire dialogue, world-class comic timing, etc. SO technical. But look how connected they are to themselves, to each other.

The channel to the inside has to remain open, otherwise you are on the surface manipulating your emotions so audiences can see them. The camera does not like that. Bogart once said, “Good film acting is six feet back in the eyes.” (Bogart went further back than that. Some actors – like Gena Rowlands, like Ingrid Thulin – go back endlessly, the whole cosmos is back there, it’s amazing they can find their way out.)

Cameli is a new actor with no formal training. His credits are okay, but not all that interesting. A leap up was Barry Levinson’s Alto Knights, although blink and you miss him. I like him in a period piece. Nothing so far has been required of him that comes even close to Off Campus. Off Campus is a huge leap forward in screen time, character work, emotion, responsibility …

Many actors with his particular background, his particular lack of experience, are SUNK in the same situation. They don’t have the skill, or their instincts aren’t finely tuned. They tense up, they push. I think Cameli’s instincts are incredible, and I’m hoping he can get work that’s worthy of him, that will allow him to keep exploring in subtle quiet ways. (I don’t hold out much hope, the industry being what it is now, but just putting it out there.) He’s been (vaguely) around for about 6 or 7 years, but essentially he’s a beginner. He wasn’t called upon to do subtle work in Saved by the Bell, ya know? Beginners usually indicate because they’re nervous, they want to do well, they want to make sure they get things right.

Stephen Kalyn has a similar beginner status, although he’s been around for a small bit as well. Kalyn is a superstar of charisma. It’s crazy. These guys really did come from nowhere.

Cameli does not indicate. He watched Robert De Niro very closely when doing Alto Knights. He dials things way back, and he LETS stuff happen, he LETS things flicker across his face, he doesn’t PUT those things there, and sometimes those things that have nothing to do with the literal moment. Sometimes these things contradict one another, as happens in life. We are rarely in a single emotional state. It’s seriously impressive. He resists the cliched choice. It’s almost like he can FEEL the power of the cliche, what the cliche wants him to do … and actively resists it. (There’s a moment in episode 5 where I can see it most clearly. He can feel the riptide of cliche, and he almost fights against it. This is perfect for the moment, even if it’s slightly awkward.) I like this because it’s rebellious on his part, he’s his own man, he wants to find his own way. He needs to keep following his instincts. Who knows what range he has? Time will tell. Listen, you want your friends to hype you like this. You want your MAN to hype you like this too. Look at Tucker! The karaoke scene is the first blending-of-the-friend-group, leading up to the real “mixer”, Drunk Shakespeare. After Drunk Shakespeare, the hockey people and the theatre people are all friends, end-stop. In just a couple of months, Tucker will be doing shots with theatre kid Dexter at the bar.

Since I started these recaps, I read “Logan’s book”, the second book in the series. The book opens with him saying he feels terrible about crushing on his best friend’s girlfriend. You should feel terrible. This is followed by a scene where Tucker calls him out, “I need to talk to you. You have got to stop this with Hannah.” This is what I said in the last re-cap. I wanted to see Logan interact more with his boys, NOT with Jules. In the books, Logan is a bigger fuckboy than Garrett and Dean put together, BUT he’s sloppy about it. Tucker expresses concern about this too: “what is going on with you?” John Logan fans have been everywhere “defending” him and I am not interested in stuff like that. I was burnt out on fandom drama after the Destiel wars of 2009, and I don’t want to bicker about a fictional character. I don’t think John Logan needs “defending”. I discuss how I make sense of what I “get” from the series, colored by my knowledge of the books, but the series should make sense to those who haven’t read the books too. I didn’t read the books until after I watched the series. I will say, having read three of the books now, I was surprised by Logan’s book. It might be my favorite. It’s so funny! “Hey, is that a red velvet chaise lounge??” Reader, I laughed out loud. I look forward to seeing how they handle Logan’s arc in season 2 and look forward to more depth. I don’t think him yearning for Hannah for eight straight episodes works, narratively, especially since Logan never comes clean, never apologizes to Garrett (an apology is in order), and also never gets to stand there and express his interior life to someone OTHER than Jules. The way Tucker glances over at Garrett while Hannah sings, the way Tucker quietly changed the song to “On the Floor” in episode 2, makes me think Tucker would be a good person for Logan to talk to. I wish we had that scene.

Jules films Hannah’s whole performance, and films Hannah staggering over to Garrett after she’s done. You can read it a number of different ways, depending on what you are looking for. He’s amused and surprised, and obviously turned on, too. Hannah is naked in his room. But there is also a part of him holding himself together, getting ready to say no to her, which might be a little tough. He’ll DO it but he needs to get himself together for it. She’s drunk enough to take off her bra ON HIS STAIRS. This will be hard to resist, but he has to. When he “gets to” the bra, maybe he’s thinking what I’m thinking: “Hannah, where do you get your amazing bras?” Garrett thought about how to suggest the drinking thing to Hannah. He is not a spontaneous person. He moves deliberately. What I see here is the deliberate part of him, with desire and excitement flickering up to the surface, plus surprise that his night is ending this way. Hannah wasn’t supposed to be sleeping over at all. Maybe there’s pride there on his face, as well: he came up with this idea for Hannah’s night and it worked. Hannah had a great time and nothing bad happened to her and … he did it. He can be trusted. Garrett is still in the same clothes he had on last night, and he sleeps on top of the covers under a separate blanket. Respectful. And probably safer. (In the book Garrett climbs under the covers with Hannah and she’s all over him immediately, crawling on top of him, etc.) True to form, he has folded her clothes for her and put them in a neat little pile right next to her head on the window seat. He placed her phone right on top of the little pile. Thoughtful and deliberate: a very Garrett thing. She’s going to wake up hungover and disoriented, and the first thing she will see is all her stuff and her phone. I already mentioned how much I like the production design of Garrett’s room, especially since it will be such a key location in episode 4. The decor is unique, providing insight into Garrett (please forgive me, but I zoomed in on his desk and found some interesting objects. See below). In episode 4, Garrett’s room becomes this liminal-zone of dreams and safety where really scary things are faced and experienced.

I actually DON’T think “want to come over, my roommates will be gone” means “let’s hook up” in this case. I think Hannah uses this as the “pretext” for addressing what’s been going on in her fantasies and also what’s happened to her since the rape.

Justin: “Can you??” Hannah, this is a horrible sexual fantasy. But I wondered: how drunk was she last night? Does she remember what happened? If she remembered, then she knows she propositioned Garrett, and he turned her down. She looks so determined at one point. Her gaze drops inward. Her mouth is set in a firm line. Something else is going on. A small heads-up: for episode 4, I wrote a massive piece that should be called Episode 4: The Saga of Sheila and M., which I considered not including, but then thought, whatever, I’ll put it at the bottom of the next re-cap, should you be interested in personal shit. Once I saw the whole series, Hannah’s steely-eyed determined look made total sense. She hears Justin saying “Can you?”, in a tone of judgment and doubt, and suddenly, she’s had it with the orgasm issue. This has nothing to do with Justin OR Garrett. She’s ready to face this thing that happened to her and the impact it’s had on her body and its responsiveness to pleasure. She knows who to ask, because he proved himself last night. She hasn’t slept in a room with a guy, maybe ever. Garrett didn’t do anything to her. The time is now. She has to at least ask. I know that look. I’ve had that look on my face. These things can take on a demonic force in your psyche. They are phantoms but they feel real. Garrett is trustworthy but Hannah has real courage. I maintain my belief that Justin is just the “pretext”, regardless of what she tells Garrett the next morning.

Garrett waking up might be the lengthiest wakeup scene in history, rivaled only by Dean Winchester’s languorous endless wake-up scenes in Supernatural. Hannah sneaks downstairs in Garrett’s jersey to make coffee. She does not know her way around the house but I’d bet the coffee maker is ready to go, maybe even already brewed on a timer, knowing Tucker. These are college students, some of them probably have early classes, but I bet Hannah did not run into anyone. Does she wonder where Allie is? Is Allie on the couch? While Hannah was trying to seduce Garrett, Allie had her own adventure out by the firepit. Did Allie call an Uber and leave? As Hannah sneaks through the quiet house, she’s gathering her forces, she is about to make a request, and she’s terrified. He’ll probably turn her down. Hopefully he’ll be nice about it. Either way, the next 10 minutes will be excruciating, but it has to be done and she has to come up with the right approach. I’m picturing Hannah waiting for the coffee to brew, butterflies inside her lurching stomach, “Holeeeee shiiiit what am I about to do ….” At the same time, she’s come up with how she wants to do it. She will tell him what she wants, she will explain why she wants it, and she can’t give him an opportunity to get all mushy about it. She wants his cooperation not his sympathy/pity, so she will have to be careful to let him know she’s not a headcase, she’s worked hard to move past the issue, but one thing eludes her … By the time she gets back up to Garrett’s room, she is calm. She has written her script. Hopefully he will say the right lines. She will not be swayed by anything he has to say – he will be horrified at what she reveals, but she’s going to have to help him past it. This must be done and it must be done now. Ella Bright plays this re-entry so perfectly. You can literally see what she has gone through while she was downstairs making coffee. This is what acting teachers mean when they say “when you come into a scene, you have to know The Moment Before.” No one just walks into a room. You have come from somewhere. A whole new Hannah sits there, staring at Garrett, calm and alert and waiting for him to wake up fully. Her face shows the result of the struggle she had downstairs. She freaked out by herself and now … it’s show time.

Garrett was fast asleep 30 seconds ago.

Props, Costumes, and Technology

Set decoration is a key component of the collaborative processes. My cousin’s wife was a set decorator and I loved hearing her stories of furnishing sets with objects the characters might like, having to work with a low budget, getting guidance from the production designer, art director, director, working within a color palette … For Off Campus, art director Gwendolyn Margetson and set decorator Leor Froelich (and their respective teams) did a wonderful job filling all of these private rooms – Hannah’s, Allie’s, Garrett’s, the hockey house, even Malone’s – with a specific array of objects, making the environments feel lived-in and the opposite of generic.

On Hannah’s wall, she has a framed poster saying PARACOSM. Is that a music festival of some kind maybe? Every object is chosen for a reason. I learned the word “paracosm” in the last year, when there was a hubbub in the “book tok” world over an author who hyped up their book, putting out artwork of the complicated sci-fi world created, before fucking everyone over and reacting badly to all the criticism of the writing. This situation generated a ton of reactions from content creators, which I found fascinating even though I knew none of the players. One person did a video on how this author created a “paracosm” with their fictional world, difficult to translate to an audience who doesn’t share the associations. I was unfamiliar with the term, but paracosms have been my bread and butter since I was a child. I looked up the definition:
Paracosm: a detailed imaginary world thought generally to originate in childhood….the creator of a paracosm has a complex and deeply felt relationship with this subjective universe, which may incorporate real-world or imaginary characters and conventions. This results in a very intimate but also often secret relationship with this world, meaning that few people ever know of its existence or contents.
Interesting, and appropriate, since Hannah spends the entire episode going in and out of a paracosm she has created for an imaginary Justin, finding it difficult – impossible, really – to make the paracosm reality.
I might be reading too much into it but knowing how set decorators work, I don’t think so. Nothing is there that wasn’t carefully chosen, and signed off on by multiple people. Believe me, having watched Guillermo del Toro obsess on every single object visible in the Frankenstein frame, whether or not an audience would even pick up on it (by the way, my book is 45% off on Amazon right now!) … I know nothing is random, and certainly not in a show like Off Campus where they clearly have money to spend. Maybe the PARACOSM poster was “just” chosen for the color pattern but again, I don’t think so. You could have chosen any number of posters with the same colors, with all kinds of different text on it, but you chose the one that said PARACOSM.

Hannah’s TERRIBLE text to Justin after the Playlist debacle, which she (thankfully) deletes. One of the things I love about the handling of technology in Off Campus is that we all have worlds going on in our phones, multiple extended conversations going on at all times. So when we get close-ups of texts, we see what else has been going on, what’s been leading up to it. There are some pretty funny details that can be seen in these phone close-ups. One of my favorites comes in episode 8, in a closeup of Dean’s texts with Allie. Even the time-stamps tell a story. Here, we see Justin and Hannah setting up their meeting, time and place. There’s almost a 1950s rich-guy-study vibe, the dark greens and greys, the light fixtures, everything very classic and masculine, but now that I’ve zoomed in to his desk I’m seeing just how specifically they filled this desk, and how much it tells us about Garrett. First of all, he’s very organized. But I spy on the top shelf a RUBIK’S CUBE? We covered Hannah’s Rubik’s cube thing in episode 1. It’s so interesting because it’s not immediately apparent the object is a Rubik’s cube because the color scheme is different than your standard cube. Never seen a Rubik’s cube with those colors, so I wonder if it was custom-made so it WOULDN’T be obvious, except to lunatics like myself who zoom in and feel gratified at the subliminal connection to Hannah, hiding in plain sight.

That desk lamp looks expensive and like it would belong on an architect’s desk in 1949. Wittgenstein. John Stuart Mill. Mary Wollstonecraft, mother of Mary Shelley. Read her Vindication on the Rights of Women!! Nietzsche, of course. We had to read Plato in high school, which probably tells you how old I am. Plato’s shadows come into my mind often, and his Utopia is a fascist state that bans all poets. As a theatre major, I am very familiar with Aristotle. I think we also read the post-War philosophers, like Camus, Sartre. The class was tough, the reading was heavy and sometimes a slog, but I’m glad I took it. I would have loved a wheel-of-fortune oral exam.

I mentioned the writing on the chalkboard in episode 1. This one is even better. Like the flashcards, some sperson had to come up with a lecture, bullet points, things to discuss, anything that would make sense for this course. The next module for the class will be about the “philosophy of sense”, with some questions to consider: “What do we see when we look at the world?” I can tell you what I see: chaos and cruelty. “How do we touch the world?” “How do we taste it?” “How do we hear it?” Just riffing here, since everything means everything on screen: Garrett and Hannah are both, due to their traumas, cut off from the world. Compartmentalizing their pain and hurt means they can’t experience the full spectrum of emotions. Episode 4 and 5 will be the real “Philosophy of Sense” module.

STUPID DEAN AND HIS STUPID AWESOME DICK: instantly iconic.

Justin’s early morning text.
