{"id":33128,"date":"2011-02-09T19:52:36","date_gmt":"2011-02-10T00:52:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sheilaomalley.com\/?p=33128"},"modified":"2011-02-09T20:01:24","modified_gmt":"2011-02-10T01:01:24","slug":"buster-keaton-running","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sheilaomalley.com\/?p=33128","title":{"rendered":"Buster Keaton Running"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mike D&#8217;Angelo has a wonderful piece up about the glories of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/articles\/seven-chances,51430\/\">Buster Keaton running<\/a>, especially in that unforgettable chase scene at the end of <i>Seven Chances<\/i>, which I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheilaomalley.com\/?p=28205\">written about before<\/a>.  He nails it.  I love how he delves into the physicality and what it is that makes it so funny, and also so &#8230; so &#8230; Buster.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You could make a case that it\u2019s the incongruity between his storied \u201cstone face\u201d and his furiously pumping legs, but the notion that Keaton is somehow emotionally inexpressive has never made much sense to me, frankly\u2014his refusal to mug doesn\u2019t make him stoic or impassionate (though it does make him look well ahead of his time, in terms of performance style). Truly, I think it\u2019s mostly just that he runs funny, in much the same way that, for example, Chaplin walks funny.
