{"id":3559,"date":"2005-08-29T09:35:20","date_gmt":"2005-08-29T13:35:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sheilaomalley.com\/?p=3559"},"modified":"2022-10-09T19:27:35","modified_gmt":"2022-10-09T23:27:35","slug":"network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sheilaomalley.com\/?p=3559","title":{"rendered":"Tribute to <i>Network<\/i>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another great tribute to another great movie &#8211; from my friend Alex.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/users\/abillings\/103226.html\">Tribute to &#8220;Network&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.livejournal.com\/users\/abillings\/102946.html\">&#8220;Network&#8221; trivia<\/a><\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s so right that that movie is prescient.  It depicted a &#8220;nightmare&#8221; scenario where TV became solely about &#8220;reality&#8221;.  The freaks of the world suddenly leap on the chance to get their 15 minutes, and TV networks collaborated with them, giving them the spotlight.  Hahahaha, right?  <i>Network<\/i> came out in 1976.  It predicted the world that we live in now.  The world of Reality TV on every network, &#8220;battle of the reality TV stars&#8221;, Jerry Springer, take your pick.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the film was seen as a broad parody, while obviously making some great points about the business of television.  But now, with the perspective of 30 years, we can see that it wasn&#8217;t a parody at all.  It was just a freakily accurate prediction.<\/p>\n<p>I posted a bunch of excerpts a while back from Sidney Lumet.
