The elephant, the huge old beast,
\nis slow to mate;
\nhe finds a female, they show no haste
\nthey wait<\/p>\n
for the sympathy in their vast shy hearts
\nslowly, slowly to rouse
\nas they loiter along the river-beds
\nand drink and browse<\/p>\n
and dash in panic through the brake
\nof forest with the herd,
\nand sleep in massive silence, and wake
\ntogether, without a word.<\/p>\n
So slowly the great hot elephant hearts
\ngrow full of desire,
\nand the great beasts mate in secret at last,
\nhiding their fire.<\/p>\n
Oldest they are and the wisest of beasts
\nso they know at last
\nhow to wait for the loneliest of feasts
\nfor the full repast.<\/p>\n
They do not snatch, they do not tear;
