Name five of your favorite books:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Kay folks, putting&#8217; my own spin on this.  I need to split it up into fiction and non-fiction.<\/p>\n<p>So:  Fiction:<br \/>\n<i>Harriet the Spy<\/i> -by Louise Fitzhugh<br \/>\n<i>Wrinkle in Time<\/i> &#8211; by Madeleine L&#8217;Engle<br \/>\n<i>Jane Eyre<\/i> &#8211; by Charlotte Bronte<br \/>\n<i>Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man<\/i> by James Joyce<br \/>\n<i>Mating<\/i> &#8211; by Norman Rush.<\/p>\n<p>Non-fiction:<br \/>\n<i>Capote<\/i> by Gerald Clarke<br \/>\n<i>The Great Terror<\/i> &#8211; by Robert Conquest<br \/>\nAll of Anne Lindbergh&#8217;s journals &#8211; I read them over and over and over &#8230;<br \/>\n<i>John Adams<\/i> by David McCullough<br \/>\n<i>Miracle at Philadelphia<\/i> by Elizabeth Drinker Bowen<\/p>\n<p><b>2. What was the last book you bought?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>Are You There God, It&#8217;s Me Margaret<\/i>  &#8211; I&#8217;ve just started re-reading it.  Oh. My. God.  It&#8217;s all coming back.  I haven&#8217;t read it since I was 10.  Wonderful book.<\/p>\n<p><b>3. What was the last book you read:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>Play It As It Lays<\/i> by Joan Didion<\/p>\n<p><b>4. Last five books that have been really meaningful to you (no particular order).<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Well, I&#8217;m not going to do the &#8220;last five&#8221; &#8211; but just books I have found particularly meaningful.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Passion<\/i> by Jeanette Winterson.  I can&#8217;t describe why.  Maybe I will someday.  I just know that that book helped me.<\/p>\n<p><i>Mating<\/i> &#8211; again.  I wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheilaomalley.com\/?p=230\">this long post about Norman Rush <\/a>&#8230; and my response to the fact that he was coming out with a &#8220;sequel&#8221; to <i>Mating<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><i>Real Life Drama<\/i> by Wendy Smith &#8211; the story of the Group Theatre in the 1930s.  It was reading that book that made me make the decision to move to New York.<\/p>\n<p><i>Franny and Zooey<\/i> &#8211; by JD Salinger.  Words &#8230; cannot &#8230; even &#8230; express &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><i>Geek Love<\/i> by Katherine Dunn.  One of the most unforgettable reading experiences I have ever had.  Barely pleasant.  Wrenching.  I read it at a time in my life when I was feeling particularly dead &#8211; a very very bad time &#8211; that book woke me up.  It didn&#8217;t feel GOOD, but it made me know I was ALIVE.<\/p>\n<p><b>5. Name three books you&#8217;ve been dying to read but just haven&#8217;t gotten around to it?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>War and Peace<\/i> &#8211; by Tolstoy (no, I&#8217;m not being a pretentious jagoff &#8211; it is on my list.  Never got around to it yet.)<\/p>\n<p><i>Les Miserables<\/i> &#8211; by Victor Hugo (again &#8211; huge book &#8211; I&#8217;ve owned it for years &#8230; haven&#8217;t gotten around to it yet)<\/p>\n<p><i>The Possessed<\/i> by Dostoevsky &#8211; MUST.
