{"id":5275,"date":"2006-09-11T09:10:00","date_gmt":"2006-09-11T13:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sheilaomalley.com\/?p=5275"},"modified":"2010-09-11T09:38:52","modified_gmt":"2010-09-11T13:38:52","slug":"the-names","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sheilaomalley.com\/?p=5275","title":{"rendered":"The Names"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Billy Collins, former poet laureate, wrote &#8220;The Names&#8221; in the wake of September 11 and read it during a special joint session of Congress in New York on September 6, 2002.<\/p>\n<p>This is what poets laureate are for.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Names<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, I lay awake in the palm of the night.<br \/>\nA soft rain stole in, unhelped by any breeze,<br \/>\nAnd when I saw the silver glaze on the windows,<br \/>\nI started with A, with Ackerman, as it happened,<br \/>\nThen Baxter and Calabro,<br \/>\nDavis and Eberling, names falling into place<br \/>\nAs droplets fell through the dark.<br \/>\nNames printed on the ceiling of the night.<br \/>\nNames slipping around a watery bend.<br \/>\nTwenty-six willows on the banks of a stream.<br \/>\nIn the morning, I walked out barefoot<br \/>\nAmong thousands of flowers<br \/>\nHeavy with dew like the eyes of tears,<br \/>\nAnd each had a name &#8212;<br \/>\nFiori inscribed on a yellow petal<br \/>\nThen Gonzalez and Han, Ishikawa and Jenkins.<br \/>\nNames written in the air<br \/>\nAnd stitched into the cloth of the day.<br \/>\nA name under a photograph taped to a mailbox.<br \/>\nMonogram on a torn shirt,<br \/>\nI see you spelled out on storefront windows<br \/>\nAnd on the bright unfurled awnings of this city.<br \/>\nI say the syllables as I turn a corner &#8212;<br \/>\nKelly and Lee,<br \/>\nMedina, Nardella, and O&#8217;Connor.<br \/>\nWhen I peer into the woods,<br \/>\nI see a thick tangle where letters are hidden<br \/>\nAs in a puzzle concocted for children.<br \/>\nParker and Quigley in the twigs of an ash,<br \/>\nRizzo, Schubert, Torres, and Upton,<br \/>\nSecrets in the boughs of an ancient maple.<br \/>\nNames written in the pale sky.<br \/>\nNames rising in the updraft amid buildings.<br \/>\nNames silent in stone<br \/>\nOr cried out behind a door.<br \/>\nNames blown over the earth and out to sea.<br \/>\nIn the evening &#8212; weakening light, the last swallows.<br \/>\nA boy on a lake lifts his oars.<br \/>\nA woman by a window puts a match to a candle,<br \/>\nAnd the names are outlined on the rose clouds &#8212;<br \/>\nVanacore and Wallace,<br \/>\n(let X stand, if it can, for the ones unfound)<br \/>\nThen Young and Ziminsky, the final jolt of Z.<br \/>\nNames etched on the head of a pin.<br \/>\nOne name spanning a bridge, another undergoing a tunnel.<br \/>\nA blue name needled into the skin.<br \/>\nNames of citizens, workers, mothers and fathers,<br \/>\nThe bright-eyed daughter, the quick son.<br \/>\nAlphabet of names in a green field.<br \/>\nNames in the small tracks of birds.<br \/>\nNames lifted from a hat<br \/>\nOr balanced on the tip of the tongue.<br \/>\nNames wheeled into the dim warehouse of memory.<br \/>\nSo many names, there is barely room on the walls of the heart.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Billy Collins, former poet laureate, wrote &#8220;The Names&#8221; in the wake of September 11 and read it during a special joint session of Congress in New York on September 6, 2002.
