I see you again and again
\ntumbling out of the sky,
\nin your slate-grey suit and pressed white shirt.
\nAt first I thought you were debris
\nfrom the explosion, maybe gray plaster wall
\nor fuselage but then I realized
\nthat people were leaping.
\nI know who you are, I know
\nthere’s more to you than just this image
\non the news, this ragdoll plummeting\u0097
\nI know you were someone’s lover, husband,
\ndaddy. Last night you read stories
\nto your children, tucked them in, then curled into sleep
\nnext to your wife. Perhaps there was small
\nsleepy talk of the future. Then,
\nbefore your morning coffee had cooled
\nyou’d come to this; a choice between fire
\nor falling.
\nHow feeble these words, billowing
\nin this aftermath, how ineffectual
\nthis utterance of sorrow. We can see plainly
\nit’s hopeless, even as the words trail from our mouths
\n\u0097but we can’t help ourselves\u0097how I wish
\nwe could trade them for something
