{"id":537,"date":"2004-03-08T14:18:26","date_gmt":"2004-03-08T19:18:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sheilaomalley.com\/?p=537"},"modified":"2010-07-11T09:27:54","modified_gmt":"2010-07-11T13:27:54","slug":"a-little-perspective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sheilaomalley.com\/?p=537","title":{"rendered":"Some Perspective On Election Nastiness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For those of you who anticipate with dread that this is going to be one of the ugliest election campaigns in recent history, (and I count myself as one of these people &#8211; I feel sick at the thought of how far away November is and I am considering moving to Monaco or Ibitha or something where I never have to hear about any of this nonsense again &#8211; actually, to be totally safe, I should move to somewhere like Myanmar, or Chad) &#8211; go and read some tales about Thomas Jefferson&#8217;s election campaign.  The bloodless &#8220;Jeffersonian revolution&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I read it last night, as I sat in a stalled train outside New Haven, an electrical wire thrashing up the tracks towards me, and thought: Woah.  Woah.  This is as ugly as it gets.<\/p>\n<p>Our recent politicians did not invent vitriol and nasty tactics.  We have not invented dirty pool.  We don&#8217;t play any dirtier than they played back then.<\/p>\n<p>THAT election campaign was nasty.<\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s only March.  And things are already pretty nasty.<\/p>\n<p>God, I cannot bear the thought of having to go through this campaign.
