Thanks, <a href=\"http:\/\/writersalmanac.publicradio.org\/\">Garrison Keillor<\/a> (so often you pick crap poems, dude &#8230; but every now and then &#8230; there is a gem)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Great Cathedrals&#8221; by George Bilgere, from <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1884836933\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=1884836933&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=thesheivari-20&#038;linkId=IPEDLCH6S5WJDBXO\">The Good Kiss: Poems<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=thesheivari-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=1884836933\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Before a date, my college roommate<br \/>\nUsed to drive his candy-apple red Camaro<br \/>\nDown to the car wash and spend the afternoon<br \/>\nWashing, waxing, vacuuming it,<br \/>\nDetailing the chrome strips, buffing the fenders,<br \/>\nSpraying the big expensive tires<br \/>\nWith their raised white lettering<\/p>\n<p>That said something like Intruder<br \/>\nOr Marauder, with a silicone spray<br \/>\nUntil they were slick and dark as sex.<br \/>\nHe polished that car as if each caress,<br \/>\nEach pass of the chamois, each loving<br \/>\nStroke of the terry cloth would increase,<\/p>\n<p>By measurable degrees,<br \/>\nThe likelihood that in the immaculate<br \/>\nFront seat, with its film of freshly applied<br \/>\nVinyl cleaner, at the end of a cul-de-sac<br \/>\nSomewhere above the campus,<br \/>\nShe would consent to be rubbed<br \/>\nAnd buffed just as lovingly.<\/p>\n<p>We do what we can,<br \/>\nAnd if God is no more impressed<br \/>\nBy the cathedral at Chartres<br \/>\nThan by a righteously clean and cherry<br \/>\nCamaro, at least He can&#8217;t say<br \/>\nWe haven&#8217;t tried<\/p>\n<p>With all our might to conceal our fear<br \/>\nThat we have little else to offer<br \/>\nThan stained glass or polished chrome,<br \/>\nThe elbow grease of our good intentions.<\/p>\n<p>So I&#8217;m happy to see<br \/>\nThat in the Christmas card photo he sent<br \/>\nMark stands, balding now,<br \/>\nWith a dignified gut, a pretty wife,<br \/>\nAnd a couple of nice-looking kids, in front<br \/>\nOf the great cathedral<br \/>\nLike the sweet vision of a future<br \/>\nHe&#8217;d been vouchsafed one day<br \/>\nLong ago, through Turtle Wax<br \/>\nOn a gleaming hubcap.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not sure if I would call this a poem &#8211; it feels a bit more like a piece of prose, with lines broken up &#8230; but I&#8217;m loving it.
