Remarkable.<\/p>\n<p><b>Into the Lincoln Tunnel <\/b>  <i>by Deborah Garrison<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The bus rolled into the Lincoln Tunnel,<br \/>\nand I was whispering a prayer<br \/>\nthat it not be today, not today, please<br \/>\nno shenanigans, no blasts, no terrors,<br \/>\njust please the rocking, slightly nauseating<br \/>\ngray ride, stop and start, chug-a<br \/>\nin the dim fellowship of smaller cars,<br \/>\nbumper lights flickering hello and warning.<br \/>\nYes, please smile upon these good<br \/>\npeople who want to enter the city and work.<br \/>\nBecause work is good, actually, and life is good,<br \/>\ndespite everything, and I don&#8217;t mean to sound<br \/>\nspoiled, but please don&#8217;t think I don&#8217;t know<br \/>\nhow grateful I should be<br \/>\nfor what I do have ?<\/p>\n<p>I wonder whom I&#8217;m praying to.<br \/>\nMaybe Honest Abe himself,<br \/>\ncraggy and splendid in his tall chair,<br \/>\nbetter than God to a kid;<br \/>\nLincoln whose birthday I shared,<br \/>\nin whom I took secret pride: born, thus I was,<br \/>\nto be truthful, and love freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Now with a silent collective sigh<br \/>\nsteaming out into the broken winter sun,<br \/>\nup the ramp to greet buildings, blue brick<br \/>\nand brown stone and steel, candy-corn pylons<br \/>\nand curving guardrails massively bolted and men<br \/>\nin hard hats leaning on resting machines<br \/>\nwith paper cups of coffee ?<\/p>\n<p>a cup of coffee, a modest thing to ask<br \/>\nAbe for,<br \/>\ndark, bitter, fresh<br \/>\nas an ordinary morning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>She has put into words some of my everyday experiences and impressions and thoughts.
