One book you\u00e2\u0080\u0099re currently reading<\/strong>: I am only reading one. I cannot read fiction right now. I can barely read, if you want to know the truth, but I do what I can. I am now reading Nureyev: The Life<\/a>\"\"<\/i>, by Julie Kavanagh. Brilliant, engrossing.<\/p>\n

One book that changed your life<\/strong>: Harriet the Spy<\/a>\"\"<\/i>, by Louise Fitzhugh. Helped make me who I am today. Helped validate my compulsive need to put pen to paper as a small child. Helped me realize that prickly weird individual little girls like myself with strange intense obsessive qualities were actually pretty awesome. She also helped lead me to the sneakers I still wear today<\/a>. One of my essays on that book here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One book you\u00e2\u0080\u0099d want on a deserted island<\/strong>: My Riverside Shakespeare<\/a>\"\". I still haven’t read the whole damn thing, although I’ve read the plays and sonnets, of course But the introductory notes alone would take me years to get through. I’ve had this book since I was 19 years old and it’s one of my most prized possessions.<\/p>\n

One book you\u00e2\u0080\u0099ve read more than once<\/strong>: Just one? I’ll go with Mating<\/a>\"\"<\/i>, by Norman Rush. Here is one of the many essays <\/a>I have written on this spectacular accomplishment.<\/p>\n

One book you\u00e2\u0080\u0099ve never been able to finish<\/strong>: “Never”? I don’t like that word. Most books I CHOOSE not to finish because they effing SUCK. Like that Nicholas Sparks book I tried to read in Ireland, whichever one it was. So far, I have “never” been able to finish War and Peace<\/a>\"\"<\/i>, but that’s only because I had to put it down last September, due to extenuating circumstances, and have been unable to pick it up again. I can’t think of a book I have tried multiple times to read and never been able to finish.<\/p>\n

One book that made you laugh:<\/strong> Scoop<\/a>\"\"<\/i>, by Evelyn Waugh. One of the funniest books I have ever read in my life. One of my essays on the book here<\/a><\/p>\n

One book that made you cry:<\/strong> Geek Love: A Novel<\/a>\"\"<\/i> by Katherine Dunn. My essay on the book here<\/a><\/p>\n

One book you keep rereading:<\/strong> Helter Skelter<\/a>\"\"<\/i>, by Vincent Bugliosi. I’m actually not sure, at this point, how many times I have read this book. I read it, on average, once every two or three years. I see no reason that this trend won’t continue.<\/p>\n

One book you\u00e2\u0080\u0099ve been meaning to read<\/strong>: Villette<\/a>\"\"<\/i>, by Charlotte Bronte. I love Jane Eyre<\/a>\"\"<\/i> so much and I’ve always wanted to read it – just never got around to it.<\/p>\n

One book you believe everyone should read<\/strong>: “Everyone”? I don’t know about that. I’m not really that bossy. But I think if you haven’t read Crime and Punishment<\/a>\"\"<\/i> you are missing out on so so much! My heart aches when I try to imagine NOT having read the book, and NOT having that book in my consciousness – so I’m just saying.<\/p>\n
