Lt. Smash confronts head-on the notion that we are already in a quagmire in Iraq, that the mission is a failure, that it is baffling that they do not have a fully working democratic government yet.
He talks about the the early colonists in America, and the development of ademocratic tradition. Democracy was not imposed on America. Iraq has no tradition of democracy. Too often we, in the West, look to such things as elections, and people lining up to the ballot box, as huge triumphs, a triumph of democracy. But time and time again (look at Africa) this has not been the case. Monsters can be voted into office just as easily as fair and enlightened men. Actually, monsters have an easier time of it because they are more willing to intimidate and murder people who get in their way.
Anyway, Lt. Smash's post is great, a must-read.
