So I saw "Gigli" last night. I am leaving for the Cape in 2 minutes, so I have no time to get into the horrid-ness. The soul-yawning abyss I stared into, while watching that film.
Ben Kepple has an absolutely hilarious review which pretty much sums it all up.
Posted by sheila | TrackBackWhile this is a movie I promised myself I would never see, ever, not even if nuclear winter threatened and the theatre Gigli was playing in was the only bomb shelter in town... I had to read the reviews. Like you, Sheila, I am a sucker for the truly awful reviews. And after reading your latest blog I had to post some snippets for you. Here they are:
"For a brief, mad, moment I had a flicker of a thought that the mundane inanity of the sordid and petty imperatives imposed on Larry and Ricki might be some Samuel Beckett-style commentary on the existential void. Then I realized that watching the movie put me closer to the existential void than they ever were, and that Godot would arrive long before this movie went anywhere."

'"Gigli" is a rigli, rigli bad movie.'

And finally, to piggyback off your comment that people don't just dislike this movie, they hate it, they hate the idea of it, they hate everyone and everything in it:
"A recent episode of South Park suggested that a fourth-grader's hand puppet could turn in a better performance than Ms. Lopez, and in the case of Gigli, it's hard to argue."
Luke Thompson, Pheonix Sun

OUCH.
And can I just say? Rotten Tomatoes? The best place to go read bad reviews.
Good luck with the move, Sheila! I'll be moving that day, too. WOO! :-)
Posted by: Jaime at August 9, 2003 11:15 PMOkay, just one more bad review since A) I know you love 'em, B) I just stumbled over it a minute ago, and C) Kim Basinger IS rather irritating as an actress. This one isn't for Gigli. It's for a movie that came out in 1992 -- Cool World -- a movie that was so bad it left me loathing 'Roger Rabbit' simply because both movies were of the same genre. You know a movie is bad when you leave hating the genre itself for having any part of the movie.
From The Washington Post:
"The major issue to be resolved in "Cool World," Ralph Bakshi's new venture into the "Roger Rabbit"-style marriage of animation and live action, is whether Kim Basinger is more obnoxious as a cartoon or as a real person."
Anyone remember this movie? Anyone?
Posted by: Jaime at August 10, 2003 08:25 AMI am sad to say I recall 'Cool World'.Good soundtrack, though.
