I've never done anything to make Christie as mad at me as she was last night. We were literally shouting at each other in the car over whether Palpatine was a wise and just leader. At one point, she looked at me and whispered "You don't really believe that, do you?"

Oh my god...picturing Bill and Christie shouting at each other in the car about Jedis...I don't know if I want to laugh or cry.

Laugh. I was laughing at how riled up I had gotten her. She was acting as if I had said "Hitler was right". I was playing Devil's Advocate and having a damn good time doing so.

After reading your post and Jonathan Last's essay, I decided to try this out on my coworkers at lunch today. The subject of Star Wars came up (as it often does), and I argued passionately that the Empire was good and the Rebels was bad. The funny thing, though, was how quickly they came around. They thought about it for a few seconds and then were saying, "Yeah, the Rebels are scum!"

Heh heh heh. "You rebel scum!"

I've always enjoyed the use of the word "scum" in the original trilogy.

New Hope: "You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villany."

Empire Strikes Back: "Bounty hunters? We don't need that scum!"

Jedi: "You rebel scum!"
