High maintenance survey from Tanya:

What’s a great late night song?
“The Man That Got Away” – Judy Garland

Name 5-10 wistful/bittersweet songs:

In My Life – The Beatles
Watershed – Indigo Girls
Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right – Bob Dylan
14th Street – Rufus Wainwright (more the music than the lyrics)
Bill – Showboat
In My Mind – Pat McCurdy (ouch)
Desperado – The Eagles

The 4 Best Songs Ever Written: I will discount classical …

In My Life – The Beatles
Bye Bye Love – Everly Brothers
Skylark – by Hoagy Carmichael
Danny Boy – Frederic Edward Weatherly

there are so many more … but these are the first ones that come to mind, for me

3 Current Favorite Songs:
No One Knows – Queens of the Stone Age
I don’t know what it is – Rufus Wainwright
Stars and Planets – Liz Phair

Classic Early Evening Drinking Music:
early swing-y Frank Sinatra

3 All Time Faves That Never Get Old To You
all time? Sheesh. Uhm … going back to childhood now, to think of the songs I loved then that I still listen to, or still can BEAR to listen to:

American Pie – Don McLean
This Train – Bob Gibson
Galway Bay – the Clancy Brothers (I still feel like laughing every time I hear that song – and honestly, adding up my childhood years and the fact that I still listen to that album now – I probably have heard that song about 8,000 times.)

Song You Want (or did) To Play At Your Wedding:
Lucky Charm – Stray Cats

4 Records You Really Dug from 2005
I’m not really a big current-music buyer – I am more inclined to spend my time buying, oh, Pat Benatar’s Greatest Hits – but here goes – and if these came out in 2006 or 1004 – I just can’t help it. I don’t have time to look it up and I don’t give a shit, frankly.

Foo Fighters double album
Queens of the Stone Age – whatever that album was called – with Dave Grohl on drums
The Wicked soundtrack
Rufus Wainwright – Want Two
Confessions on a dance floor – Madonna

Favorite Records From This Year So Far:
(see comment above.)

Fiona Apple’s new album – I think it came out in 2005 though – ack
I can’t do this one, sorry – I don’t follow trends

Good Angry Songs:
Father of Mine – Everclear
Rape Me – Nirvana
Mother Mother – Tracy Bonham
You Hurt Me (And I Hate You) – Eurythmics
Sweet Lorraine – Patty Griffin

One of Your Favorite Lyrics:
One of them is, without a doubt:

Till I collapse Im spilling these raps long as you feel em
Till the day that I drop youll never say that Im not killing them
Cause when I am not then I am stop pinning them
And I am not hip-hop and Im just not Eminem.
Subliminal thoughts when Im stop sending them women are caught in webs spin and hauk venom
Adrenaline shots of penicillin could not get the illing to stop.
Amoxacilin is just not real enough.
The criminal cop killing hip-hop filling minimal swap to cop millions of Pac listeners.
You’re coming with me, feel it or not youre gonna fear it like I showed you the spirit of God lives in us.
You hear it a lot, lyrics that shock
Is it a miracle or am I just a product of pop fizzing up?
Fo shizzle my whizzle this is the plot listen up
You bizzles forgot
slizzle does not give a fuck.

Also, the lyrics to my sister Siobhan’s song “Belly Under”:

It’s second nature now,
the third time around trying to be cured.
Second nature comes naturally.
I did double takes,
third time’s a charm to be fourth rate.
I plead the fifth to what went on.
I stood too close,
hoping it would make us closer,
but that’s a bad theory.
And I forgot the difference
between friend and foe (it’s tough I know)–
flip a coin between friend or enemy.

But all those circumstances?
Fuck em all, just take my chances!

It ain’t enough to sit and wonder.
It ain’t enough to say I care.
No wonder I’m going belly under
from all the world’s tear and wear.

Pins and needles got in my feet
(sat too long in my seat)–
at least I know I still got my senses.
But it makes it hard to hustle
with blood and bone inbetween muscle…
that’s all I know about anatomy.
Blood and bone can look so gruesome on their own–
skin covers what we dont’ wanna see.

But a heart beating on its own,
won’t beat long all alone!

It ain’t enough to sit and wonder.
It ain’t enough to say I care.
No wonder I’m going belly under
from all the world’s tear and wear.

In Times Square,
I feel like i’m not even there.
(the ghost under the marquis).
The marquis’ read the latest, the greatest,
the highest-paidest–
household names ain’t what they cracked up to be.
From the sky,
they can’t make out the words on the signs.
That’s okay, the angels don’t wanna know.

Heaven sent and heaven goes–
even they can’t decide i suppose

It ain’t enough to sit and wonder.
It ain’t enough to say I care.
No wonder I’m going belly under
from all the world’s tear and wear.
From all the world’s tear and wear
from all the world’s tear and wear

5 Cover Songs Arguably Better Than the Original:

Good Albums To Workout To:
Kelly Clarkson – Breakaway
Madonna – Immaculate Collection

Good Dining Music:
Allison Kraus

Good Album To Have Sex To:
anything by Prince
also The Color and the Shape, Foo Fighters

A Good Album To Put You In the Mood (that is NOT Sade, Marvin Gaye or Barry White):

album? How ’bout just a song? I will admit that Tempted (by Squeeze) does the trick for me. Perhaps I should be mortified but honestly, this is an important topic and why be embarrassed about what works? Life’s too short. I wouldn’t care if MMMM Bop put me in the mood. If it works, why be embarrassed.

Another good one is Happiness Is a Warm Gun – by the Beatles

Good Album To Sleep To:

I play a CD of a thunderstorm – a mild mild thunderstorm with a torrential rainfall – to put me to sleep. Beautiful. Or if we need music here – then definitely the album Pink Moon, by Nick Drake.

5 Good Rock Songs That You Can Dance To: rock?? I’m just gonna list what makes me dance without worrying about the damn genre, okay chappie?

Lithium – Nirvana
Rock Lobster – B 52s

Great Love Song:

Dream – Everly Brothers (makes me swwon)

Song To An Ex That Isn’t Meanspirited:

The heart of the matter – Don Henley (do NOT even get me started on that song)

Song To An Ex That Is Kinda Meanspirited:
(I love Tanya’s answer: “Joe Lies” by Lily Taylor.)

Also: Gone – Kelly Clarkson

Song to Listen to While in The Country Looking at Stars:

One Vision – Queen

Song to lose your Mind to:

Crazy on You – Heart

Song To Cry In Your Pillow to:

Watershed – Indigo Girls (it’s not particularly a sad song – I just know that I actually have cried into my pillow many times and that song happened to be playing, so I’m just sayin’. A to B)

Songs That Make You Feel Amped and Inspired:

London Calling – the Clash

Great Semi-Obscure B-side:

I would say the genius Fountains of Wayne acoustic cover of Britney Spears’ … Baby One More Time qualifies

Song That Makes You Miss Your Mom:

anything by Joan Baez

That’s Baby Makin’ Music (No, Really):

Love and Happiness – Al Green

Criminally Underrated Band That Didn’t Get Attention and Then Broke Up:

I need to think about this one

Best Fuck You I Am a Teenager in Pain Song:

It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to

Feel No Shame: Great Current Pop Songs:

anything by Kelly Clarkson

Album No One Would Expect You To Love:

I have no idea how people perceive me so I cannot answer this. I like all kinds of music so I can’t see why there should be any expectations of me.

Album No One Would Expect You To Dislike:

I’m not wacky about most Jackson Browne. I love one or two of his songs – but the rest? No. This would probably surprise (and maybe hurt) some.

Album No One Would Expect You To Really Know:

The Tourists – The Tourists

Emo Album You Actually Like:

I know nothing about that emo shit. I’m old.

Good, But Overrated Cause Of Indie Revisionism:

Overrated? How ’bout Big Bad Voodoo Daddy? I love them though. I actually don’t understand this question.

No clue what this even means. I’m dumb!

3 Contemporary Artists That Were Your Faves 10 Years Ago:
U2
Elvis Costello
Lenny Kravitz

Music That Makes You Feel Sophisticated:
My mix of Scott Joplin rags
Glenn Gould playing the Goldberg Variations

Fave Electronic Record You Own:

See I’m really showing my ignorance – is “electronic” a genre of music? Isn’t that electronicA? I’m not answering this one.

Fave Hip-Hop Record You Own:

probably The Eminem Show – just in sheer amount of times I have listened to it.

Hip-Hop Song You Know All the Lyrics Too:

many of them.

Random Album You Loved In High School But Are Afraid To Admit It:

Haven’t you read Diary Friday? I am obviously not afraid to admit ANYthing about high school.

Let’s see. I adored Adam Ant with the fire of 1000 suns.

Album You May Have Listened To More In Highschool than Any Other Album:
Time – ELO That was my favorite album EVER. MADE.

Also:

Beauty and the Beat – Go Gos

If You Could Enter A Wrestling Ring to a Song It Would Be:

Best Forgotten Sappy Rock Ballad from the ’70s:

Alice Copper: How You Gonna See Me Now

Dear darlin’ surprised to hear from me?
Bet you’re sittin’ drinkin’ coffee, yawnin’ sleepily
    Just to let you know
    I’m gonna be home soon
    I’m kinda awkward and afraid
Time has changed your point of view
    Chorus:
How you gonna see me now
Please don’t see me ugly babe
‘Cause I know I let you down
    In oh so many ways
How you gonna see me now
Since we’ve been on our own
Are you gonna love the man
    When the man gets home

(forgive me, I’m going through a major Alice re-aquanitance these days.)

  2. Cullen says:

I think the desert island thing is supposed to be what albums you would take with you on a deserted island. I had to think about that for a while before I got it.

There are very few I could think of, it would have to be some of the mixed CDs I’ve made over the years. Slayer’s Reign in Blood, Dream Theater’s Scenes From a Memory … um … I don’t know what else.

  3. red says:

cullen – oh my God, you are totally right – hahahahaha Now I feel stupid – I thought “Desert Island” was some indie label or something like that. HA!!

Okay, so let me think. I have 30 seconds to choose. Off the top of my head:

    S & M – Metallica
Color and the Shape – Foo Fighters
Livin’ with Ghosts – Patty Griffin
Ragtime – the soundtrack to the Broadway musical
    Clancy Brothers at Carnegie Hall

    “How vintage!”

Can’t wait to see what you pick, sarahk!

This survey took me forever to fill out – it was quite arduous.

    //ifit was great..i danced.//

So Mitchell, basically what you’re saying is:

“Alls I want to do is deeyance.”

  10. red says:

Okay, Mitchell, now for my serious comments:

    — I totally should have put “will you still love me tomorrow” on “best song ever written” list. TOTALLY agree.

    — //ersatz Aliyah//??? FUCK YOU. And also: I LOVE YOU.

    — “Lookeee here Huck do you want to go to heeeee-yeaven?”

I love your eclectic tastes, Mitchell – seriously – you have introduced me to so much cool music

  11. mitchell says:

any chance of seeing u this weekend?

  12. red says:

I’m coming up Saturday morning. I’ll leave Sunday night – maybe we could go to the beach?

  13. JFH says:

Song I Can’t Get Out of My Head Due to Shiela’s Blog:

“Sing, Sing, Sing” by Benny Goodman

  14. red says:

You’re such a hep cat, JFH!

  15. JFH says:

BTW, I like Allison Kruse for dining music, but my wife and me’s (boy, my HS English teacher would kill me for making up that last word) current fav is Nora Jones

  16. Jay says:

Good angry songs? Fuck that. The BEST angry songs are just about anything by Pantera, Five Minutes Alone being a prime example. If that song doesn’t make you want to get drunk and punch somebody in the throat, I don’t know what will.

  17. red says:

    Jay – hahahahahahahahaha

I am all for any song that makes people want to punch other people in the throats.

  18. siobhan says:

thanks fo rthe ‘shout out’, sheil! veyr cool!
i love your ‘clear a room’ one. that seriously would work wonders. i should buy a kenny g cd to play when i’m trying to close the bar and people won’t leave.

  19. Nightfly says:

Song I Can’t Get Out of My Head Due to JFH’s Comment on Shiela’s Blog:

“Can’t Get It Out of My Head” by ELO. Gotta love a heartbreak song that references Ulysses and the Syrens.

Now I have to get to work on this, darn it all. I’ll track back when I’m finished, Sheila.

  20. just1beth says:

MITCHELL- I GUESSED IT WAS YOU!! As soon as I saw “Rainy Days and Mondays” I was all “Oh my god- It’s Mitchell!!!!!” I forced myself to read the whole thing to PROVE it to myself that it was you. (I was right, by the way- ha ha!!)
Sheila- two things- ONE- TIME by ELO is Conor’s new favorite album, to the point where it.is.all.he.plays.EVER. Thank god he is at camp. I still find it so amusing that you and he have such similar musical taste.
TWO- any chance we can see each other at all this weekend? I know this is a super quick visit on your part, but know that it is an open invite for you and your pals/family. I am working Saturday morning at 8 setting up a wedding at the Dunes Club, but I will be back by 4:00 at the latest. Sunday morning I will be breaking down the decor, and heading up to Michele’s new house after that. Bring a bathing suit, do some night swimming- or day swimming!!

  21. red says:

Beth – just emailed you – weird!! … I forgot about the Michelle gathering on Sunday. hmmmm. we will work something out – I’ll see what Mitchell’s plans are – so we can nail something down.

I am dying to get out of the hot stinky city and swim in the dern ocean – or in your pool!!

  22. My favorite bittersweet song is James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain.” Another nice bitter ode to an ex is Randy Travis’ “Have a Nice Rest of Your Life” with its final blowoff “And don’t forget your toothbrush.”

  23. just1beth says:

You know, you could always swim in BOTH. But not at the same time, of course. I thought it was funny that we were writing to each other about the same time, too!! Don’t worry- we’ll catch up with each other. Even if it is for some night swimming somewhere!

  24. red says:

Sounds absolutely perfect to me. Can’t wait!!

  25. mitch says:

MITCHELL- I GUESSED IT WAS YOU!! As soon as I saw “Rainy Days and Mondays” I was all “Oh my god- It’s Mitchell!!!!!”

Actually, I guessed it was (the original) Mitchell, too.

Amazing how after reading this blog for a couple of years that there are some commenters who stick out just by tone and style and taste.

Besides Sheila herself, of course, hahahahahahaha :-)

  26. red says:

mitch – that’s one of my favorite things about blogging. Getting to know all of these people – it’s awesome. :)

And yeah – getting to know people’s different tastes – I love it!

  27. miker says:

Joan Baez did a version of Danny Boy (long ago) that gives me chills every time I hear it.

Belly Under is an exceedingly cool song…

  28. Mark says:

If You Could Enter A Wrestling Ring to a Song It Would Be:

Damn, I tried to kick start this as a blog meme back in February. Dare I dream this idead came from me? Probably not….

My song would be “Why Can’t We Be Friends.” If I were part of a tag team, it would be “It’s Raining Men.”

  29. Mr. Lion says:

    anything by Prince

Good Lord. What position(s) would that involve?

  30. amelie says:

sheila, i love the selections, but i especially love this:

    //and if these came out in 2006 or 1004 – I just can’t help it.//

1004? hahahahaaa, i don’t think any of them were that old! and honestly, i’d have Wicked on that list too, though it might be a few years earlier. who cares, right??

  31. red says:

    amelie – hahahahahahahaha I didn’t notice that!!

1004?? bwhahaha – like I’m talking about my favorite Gregorian chant or something.

  32. LOOK_CLOSER says:

Wow, this is a crazy quiz. But not too crazy for music lovers, I think.
I wished you named a concrete song for “If You Could Enter A Wrestling Ring to a Song It Would Be:”…
And yes, “electronic” IS a music genre. (sorry, just had to mention that as a fan of that genre, this seems to be a quiz made by a european…)

  33. Missy says:

I’m going to have to work on this one. Did you know MTV (quietly) celebrated it’s 25th anniversary this week? (time to think of favorite videos…)

  34. just1beth says:

Mark- “Why Can’t We Be Friends”….That is frickin’ BRILLIANT!!!! I can’t stop laughing!!!!

  35. Nightfly says:

Sorry – your trackback is balking at me, Sheila. Have to do this the long way. The whole PC thing is just kicking me in the shins tonight. Time to load up the angry playlist…

  36. Laura says:

Rarely do I find coversongs to be better than originals, especially concerning the Beatles, but for reasons I cannot explain I absolutely adore Johnny Cash’s version of “In My Life”. It is definitely bittersweet, but very lovely.

  37. red says:

Something is up with my trackbacks – they aren’t showing up anymore. Does anyone with Movable Type have any suggestions as to what to do??

  38. Lisa says:

I trackbacked you too. Typepad SAID it pinged you, but I guess Moveable Type sent it back like an overdone steak.

  39. Erik says:

There is no reason to feel shame about loving Kelly Clarkson! I got over that shame long ago. She’s just too good. I can’t help but sing (or scream) along.

  40. red says:

Erik – yup. She’s totally fantastic. The real deal.

  41. Erik says:

a friend of mine is the audience booker for shows like RockStar and American Idol, and even though I’ve never really watched American Idol, my sixteen-year-old (at the time) cousin was obsessed with the first season of AI, and I took her to a taping of the show. This was towards the end of the season, there were only three singers still in the competition, including Kelly Clarkson, of course. I remember the other two singers were just so-so (the judges barely even paid attention while the other singers were singing–they were all sitting there at the table talking to each other, which I thought was terribly rude), but the one thing I will never forget is Kelly Clarkson’s voice. It filled the room. It was awesome–really, truly. I was kinda shocked, actually. And then her album totally fulfilled all of the promise of her voice that day.

    So, yeah–yup, the real deal.

  42. Clayton says:

re: 5 Cover Songs Arguably Better Than the Original

Though I hesitate to say it, especially since Michael Bolton has already been mentioned as a room-clearer (and I wouldn’t disagree otherwise), his cover of “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” is kick-ass.
