Ebertfest Update: QA with Guillermo del Toro

Ebertfest 2016 starts this Wednesday, and the opening film is Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak. I gave Crimson Peak 4 stars in my review, and I saw it in a relatively small press screening room, so the thought of seeing it in that gigantic movie palace with 1500 seats – all of them full – is already thrilling. That’s how it should be seen.

I am extremely honored to have been asked to moderate the post-film QA with Del Toro, who will be attending as an honorary guest. I very much look forward to peppering him with questions about his extraordinary imagination, his influences, and working with that amazing cast of actors.

Wow, this sounds amazing. Where do you begin with someone like GdT where there are a thousand questions you could ask? Seems like it is such a ripe tree to choose from.

Can I also ask whether you need to stick to scripted questions only in a panel like this? Or can you react to their responses, pursuing any tangents they bring up?

Paula – I know – at first I was like “Where do I begin??” – and then I did some research on the production (which I had kind of already done for the review), and the questions started flooding into my mind. Open-ended ones, you know, that can get him talking – although I don’t think that will be a problem with him! :)

I definitely will have my “script” in mind – just to keep us on course – but if he goes off script, oh YES, I will follow his tangents!! A GDT tangent? Yes, please!

I’m sure you follow him on Twitter? It’s one of my favorite Twitter feeds in existence. He’s such an ARTIST and ENTHUSIAST.

Fantastic! I can’t imagine where his mind goes at times. Yes, I follow him on Twitter and his recent post about the film museum in Paris reminded me that he directed Mimic. I still have nightmares about the man-bug, how it folded up its arm made those chittering noises. Gives me the creeps even sitting here now in broad daylight. Even the ‘least’ of his movies have that visual invasiveness.

Your life is quickly getting to the point where you will have no time to report on your phenomenal activities and accomplishments! “A dazzler a day” Sheila!! SO PROUD!! Love you. Stevie
