Harry Potter

I’m slowly starting to freak out as the publication date fast approaches.

I feel like a little kid on Christmas Eve. Like – my anticipation is almost unpleasant.

My wife and kids are more excited than I am. I love the series, too, but this will be…..the end. Impending endings always make me melancholy.

  2. De says:

You and me BOTH. Just last night I was having a discussion with a 16 yr old about the new book. We were discussing the rumors circulating. I suddenly felt 16 again!

  3. Jen W. says:

I find it a little disconcerting that I have NEVER been so excited about a book before…not even the new Babysitters’ Club books when I was a kid. I’m going out of town when it is released, so I’m making my boyfriend mail it to me. God knows I can’t wait a week until I get home. :)

  4. Lisa says:

I cannot wait. Right now I’m re-reading OotP to get ready for the movie, and then on to HBP to get ready for the new book.

    Can. Not. Wait.

  5. red says:

Lisa – yeah, i was thinking of going back and re-reading, just to get up to speed with the series.

    Has anyone pre-ordered?

    What are your buying plans?

I’m just gonna go to the B&N a couple days after it comes out. I can wait that long.

    But how about everybody else?

  6. Harriet says:

I’m just not ready! I was doing a reread of the whole series, but I got behind. Now I have all of 4, 5, and 6 to read in just two weeks. I’m getting mine at midnight, and I think I’m dressing up this year, too. It’s my last chance, so I’d better make it count.

  7. DBW says:

Haven’t said much about it, but my son is over in Europe right in this mess at the moment. On the bright side, he is spending the night tonight in the castle where Harry Potter is often filmed. He is very excited, to say the least. He has visited the train station, and ridden the train, from the movie

  8. amelie / rae says:

i reread the entire series last week on vacation. everytime anyone saw me, i had a different book in my hand. [[the Harry Potter reread ended with the beginning of Kapuscinski on Thursday.]]

my mom preordered, which means my mom, my twin sister, and i will all try to get the book from each other to read at the same time, with different bookmarks for them [[i never really use bookmarks, myself]] and then i’ll probably have to go buy my own after a day or two. crazy.

  9. Su says:

You managed to reread the entire series in a single week? Wow! I was planning to at least skim through HBP,but as always…

The expectation is somewhat “unpleasant” by now though, you’re exactly right, Sheila.
I’m (uncharacteristically) giddy and slightly melancholic at the same time, also somewhat scared of any kind of mediocrity, “please-all” concerning the final…
Well, I pre-ordered at amazon a couple of months ago so I don’t have to worry about getting any bones crushed in town. Worked fine for the last two volumes.

  10. Anne says:

I would actually go at midnight when it goes on sale, and fight my way through a throng of little witch-dressed people, damn the indignity, but can’t imagine I’d really read much from 12 to 2am, and might be annoyed reading it sleepily, so guess I can wait and go the next day.

I went to B & N on the Saturday last time and it was fine. Not too crowded.

    But I really can’t wait.

  11. tracey says:

Now I’m wondering if I should pre-order. Like, what if I go into the bookstore a few days later and THEY ARE ALL OUT??? I may just have a giant baby hissy fit in the store.

    This is my fear.

  12. Mark says:

For the last three books, I’ve just gone to Target the day after the release. They’ve always had plenty of copies, with a nice discount to boot.

  13. Tainted Bill says:

My wife is going to buy it at midnight, and probably be up all night reading it.

Unfortunately, the 21st is our first anniversary, and I fully expect to lose out to Harry Potter. I’ve made a rule that she can’t read it that night, but I expect that to be as effective as your average U.N. sanction.

  14. red says:

    Bill – hahahahahahahaha

I’m picturing the romantic atmosphere – and your wife saying, ‘No let me just finish this chapter!!”

Happy pre-anniversary, by the way – has it really been a year??

Really happy for you guys – give my best to your wife.

  15. red says:

Oh – and with the last book – I also waited til the next day, went to my local B&N, and there were plenty of books. So I’m not worried – I don’t need it on that first day.

This is gonna be fun, though!

  16. sarahk says:

We’ve preordered 2 copies. The normal copy and the Deluxe (we have deluxes of 5 & 6 and plan to get 1-4 that way as well). We preordered the very first chance we got, which means if the price is lower than the preorder when it comes out, we get the lower price, and the price never goes up. We’re always happy with the preorder.

I decided to reread all 6. I’m still on book 1. I’m a very slow reader and my meds knock me out the second I hit the pillow, and the only time I get to read is when I get to bed. But I did reread 4, 5, 6 sometime last year…

I’m so melancholic. However it ends, it’s the END. No more. Usually when artists retire (examples Barbra Streisand, Billy Joel), I want them to just stay retired. In JKR’s case, I’m actually hoping she changes her mind someday. Unless she kills Harry. I really don’t want him to die, but half of me thinks he will.

WHY, sheila, why did you have to ask the question?

  17. red says:

sarah – ha! This is gonna be so fun – as we all read it together – it’s gonna be tough to avoid spoilers. We have to all promise each other to not give crap away!!!
