Thanks so much for the link, as always. I was wondering why my sitemeter had nudge upwards. I should have written much more but I felt inadequate to the task. He really was my favorite actor from that era. Every time I see his name in the opening credits it makes me happy — at least part of the film will be worthwhile.
I like larger-than-life actors like Charles Laughton, but I also like actors such as Scheider, who manage to disappear into each character and never, but never impose on the story. Remember the scar-comparison scene in Jaws? and the moment when Scheider considers entering his appendectomy scar, then thinks better of it? it’s so underplayed, but so freaking hilarious. Now the other two actors in that scene are also doing some of the best work of their careers, but Scheider steals the moment and walks softly as he does it.
Campapse – it’s funny, in my little tribute to Scheider (link here) – my good friend Jackie also referenced that great scar-comparison moment. I love to see it getting some props. The big moments are, of course, famous and rightly so … but I love those small moments too.
