Review: The Happy Prince (2018)

The Happy Prince is Rupert Everett’s debut as a writer/director. He also stars, playing Oscar Wilde in the final 3 years of his life – a period which has always fascinated me (and haunted me).

My review of The Happy Prince is now up at Rogerebert.com.

I’m glad to hear this is good. The trailer was a bit of a jumble.

Rupert Everett can bring complexity even portraying a puppy if needed, I think he’s superb, from the very first film I saw him in, Another Country.
I would love to watch him as Wilde, especially in his last days, when lost opportunities, lost friends and new regrets and was all he had.
I once read that Wilde, while visiting a Fair, recorded a few sentences in Paris with one of the new voice devices just invented then. But even in this internet world, I haven’t be able to find it. It would thrill me.

Clary – I’d be interested to hear your reaction. I’ve always liked Everett too – and now that he’s older all other kinds of possibilities have opened up for him. He is not afraid of the “uglier” parts of Wilde’s story – he’s very very honest.
