Christopher Hitchens on Czeslaw Milosz.

I posted a brief thing on poet Milosz when he died – and I’ve read a lot of obituaries, etc., but Hitchens’ is the one to read.

That is a very well-written piece, red, and Milosz is a deserving recipient of such an effort.

As an aside, “Reading Lolita in Tehran” is an incredibly appealing title. The image of those women removing their burqas and sitting around discussing Nabokov is truly delicious. Gonna hafta check that one out…

My lovely wife, being Polish, loves his stuff.

And she reads it in the original.

Milosz came and spoke at my college about 10 years ago, and just blew the doors off the hall we were all in. It was weeks after his appearance, and people were walking around campus, reading his poetry, and talking about him. Heartening and fascinating to see people respond like that to such a man.
