Times have been crazy in the O’Malley dynasty the last couple of days with the news that my cousin Mike has been nominated for his role on Glee. Not a surprise – he’s terrific on the show, and his scenes in particular bring on the waterworks with regularity. As my friend Mitchell said to me, “I predicted it months ago.” Mike is a hard worker, generous with his talent and success, a huge help to me in my own projects, a down to earth guy, and a wonderful actor and writer. This is a moment of well-deserved success for him, and we’re all so proud.
Here’s a terrific interview with Mike on getting the Emmy nomination.
And sweet sweet comments from his fellow nominee, Chris Colfer, who plays his son:
I think I’m more excited about his nomination than mine, just because I feel like, without him, there’s no way I would’ve personally been nominated. We have such great chemistry. And he’s the type of guy that just puts everything into everything he does. He deserves it so much, I’m so happy for him. I know I’m not really related to him, but I feel like a proud son.
What a sweetheart.

I absolutely adore Glee, and Mike’s portrayal of Burt is one of my favorite parts. I hope he gets more material in the upcoming season, and I’m definitely rooting for him to take that Emmy home!
The Emmy’s very rarely get it right. This time they did.
And now…he BETTER freaking WIN!
Very generous of Chris Colfer. Very nice. Wonderful news.
Holy crap, congrats cousin Mike! This is so well deserved – the impact his character is huge and that wouldn’t be the case without his talent.
Hooray for Mike! I love that they went to iHop to celebrate!
Ann – Also, an Emmy nomination cannot upset the schedule of the kids. I love that. A quiet celebration so as not to mess up the whole day.
The latest is that Mike has been made a regular cast member for next season. Great news all around.
Ok, how did I miss that Mike O’Malley’s your cousin? Holy Crap, I’m an idiot! I’ve been reading your site for FOREVER (seriously, what, seven, eight years?) and didn’t put two and two together when you mentioned ‘Cousin Mike’ every now and again. LOL. Chalk it up to chemo brain. :)
I’m so happy for him. I haven’t been watching Glee (the husband claimed he’d had enough jazz choir in high school, thank you ever so much), but Mike was AMAZING in My Own Worst Enemy. It was such a short run, but the husband and I were devoted to the show and were bummed when it was canceled. What they had him doing, switching personalities at the drop of a hat between this ruthless badass and devoted, nice guy, family man, had to have been a bitch to pull off. He did it seamlessly. I have no doubt his Emmy nom. is well deserved.
Kathy – yes, he was great in Worst Enemy too! And yes, that’s Cousin Mike!! :)
Brilliant! Congrats to Cousin Mike. May he have success to match his grace, skill, and hard work.
He’s been appearing in a series of Time Warner commercials for ages. Every time one comes on, I say, “Hey cousin Mike.”
I like the one with the sunglasses.
I love the one with the puppies. Yay Mike!
I’ve mentioned this several times but if he doesn’t win, the Emmys are DEAD to me!
De – hahahaha You’ve got the O’Malley’s collective backs!
