Only Monsters Play God: Frankenstein posters and release date

Excited to share that Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein will be released in select theaters on October 17, and will be streaming in November, but I suggest seeing it in the theatre – if you can – since the thing is so HUGE in scope and visuals.

And they’ve finally released two posters! With Guillermo’s awesome tagline (no marketing team could come up with it, and it speaks totally to the theme of his film – and Mary Shelley’s novel, incidentally):

Only Monsters Play God.

My book on the film – featuring gorgeous art and my interviews with everyone involved – production design, music, editing, actors, sound design, concept design, costumes, even a Tiffany’s jewelry representative since they designed and leant jewelry for the film – plus lengthy interviews with Guillermo and also the genius Mike Hill, who designed the creature – is now available for pre-order.

I’m so thrilled and excited to see the movie and to hold the book in my trembling hands! Beyond proud of you, dear Sheila, to think of your magnificent journey to this place of true acknowledgment by the industry of your talent and expertise. I feel like I’ve had the gift of watching with great pleasure as you have ascended to this pinnacle. Even Pauline Kael never wrote a book like this! OK she wrote a few good things 🥰🥰 Congratulations!

    Love XOXO Stevie

      Stevie!!

Thank you thank you!! My hands will tremble too – when I open the box with the actual book in it – I don’t know when that will be but soon!! I finished up last minute touches in around May – the book was done in January but there was a lot that had to come after. It was a huge endeavor talking to all these people and then craft it into something – and WAIT until you see the layout. all the images and photos. I can’t wait to see it and touch it!

Kael did write that Citizen Kane book which, unfortunately, is kind of annoying – haha – and not really the same thing!

It’s been an amazing opportunity, especially since Guillermo asked for me to do it, a huge honor. I hope people like it.

also REALLY excited to see the movie again! it’s really emotional and gorgeously designed. I think it’s beautiful!

      Love you!!

Stevie – you’ve been here from the beginning!! I mean, my dad commented on your blog once. !! We’ve been around the block, friend, and look at us now!

“Only monsters play God” seems like an elaborate scheme to justify the sentence, “Frankenstein is the monster” (complimentary)

    • sheila says:

yeah that’s the point, only I don’t find it elaborate. just poetic. It prepares you for Guillermo’s approach to this extremely well-known and oft-told story.

      • Mike Molloy says:

Was making a joke about the eternal discourse, “AKSHULLY, Frankenstein is the doctor, not the monster”. GDT designing himself a sneaky way around the pedantry. Not sure if the joke was too dumb to get, or too obvious to bother making…

        • sheila says:

Oh, okay. I guess I can see it but I think it’s deeper than that. the kick is thematic and has to do with the story and how it is often interpreted. In Mary’s book, the monster IS Frankenstein. The so-called “monster” is innocent. If he’s scary or threatening it’s becaue the world has been cruel. Movie interpretations of the book often don’t deal with this at all.

          • Mike Molloy says:

Yes I get it! It is a terrific tagline, pithy & yet insightful about the story. I was just making a dumb sh*tpost kind of comment. I should probably keep that kind of crap over on bluesky
