This sounds bad, but I was glad to read about Suze. That’s on my list now :)
Writing about Merv made me remember how much I liked Suze. The premise was predictable but the characters were not! It’s also always nice to see a film where a middle-aged woman is the center. And not a “fabulous” kickin ass middle-aged woman but an uncertain needy one. It’s refreshing!
Being an uncertain middle-aged women myself, I am appreciative of a story like that! Have you seen High Desert on Apple? Patricia Arquette is pretty amazing as a complex middle-aged women. Brilliant, flawed, a heroic mess.
Ooh no I have not seen High Desert! I will check that out! Arquette works so much and I can’t keep up. But you know it’s always going to be interesting. I just watched her play the doomed Maggie Murdaugh in the Hulu series about the Murdaugh murders – and she is excellent. She’s doing stuff other actors aren’t doing. They can’t, because they have too much vanity.
I recently tripped over one of those “actors on actors” videos – hosted by Variety, I think – where two actors sit and talk to each other. They might not even know each other! In this one, Julia Roberts and Patricia Arquette sat down. It’s FABULOUS. I think because Roberts seems truly in awe – they have such different careers. Roberts seems pretty content – she’s never been one of those strivers, trying to be different so she can win Oscars – but she recognizes she’s in the presence of someone who is doing something she literally can’t do. It’s such a fascinating dynamic. It made me want to see them work together – they have real chemistry.
Here’s the Julia Roberts and Patricia Arquette video.
I’m a little squeamish about true crime, but still considering watching for Arquette. Lack of vanity is a kind of superpower- it opens so many possibilities. Thank you for the interview! Julia is one of my all time faves- even if I don’t love every film, when the film is a good one, I love what she brings ( Homecoming was a career best for me- maybe because it blends her typical persona with some more average person grit and flaws). Ok- I’ll stop filling up your comments for a while. Thanks for your generosity as writer! A joy!
Just finished High Desert episode 1 last night on strength of Kristen’s recommendation & I’ll second it based on what first 40 minutes, looks like a good one
Has a little bit of a Poker Face feel to it, having a female lead who’s a bit of a loose cannon (definitely looser in High Desert), doing generally investigative type activities, at least sometimes in western locations
Looking forward to it!
She’s such an interesting actress.
