Jennifer Finch’s death has really hit me. She has inspired so many but my experience is completely subjective. The sound of L7 was part of the soundtrack of my 20s and 30s. And L7 is never far from me. They’re always on rotation to this day. I just can’t believe it. I’m sorry, I haven’t been able to write much these days. Something seems to have happened to me. I can’t find the words. Here’s her obit in Rolling Stone. I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge her passing. She was huge for me. Thank you, Jennifer. You are free now. No more pain.
I saw them a decade ago in Montreal, and while I totally missed that boat (just a tad too young and too European) and didn’t know their work too well, I knew of them and had an absolute blast, and I can totally see how that’s the kind of loss that would hurt deeply. I’m so sorry.
It’s just really close. My generation. I feel really lucky that people like her – and Courtney – and Liz Phair and PJ Harvey – all those weird tough chicks – were my peers and also just highlighted and mainstream, for about 5 seconds. It was formative – I didn’t realize it at the time, but … even 6 years later, the main pop culture “role models” would have been Britney and Christina – which is FINE – and I like both of them as well. I am not an animal! I always admired people in multiple generations and loved Carole Lombard as much as I loved Jennifer Finch – I am just glad I grew up with movie screens filled with tomboy-children (Jodie Foster and Tatum O’Neal and Kristy McNichol) and tough rough girls like Jennifer in young adulthood. a unique time … and losing her is chilling because … we are peers.
They were so WILD onstage, you just couldn’t believe it. Heavy metal girls.
