Garfield on Garfield

Kim Morgan shares some video clips of her interview with Julie Garfield, daughter of the great John Garfield, at last year’s Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival. Kim writes:

Discussing the movie, her father and his life, Julie (on stage and off) is what I imagine her dad was like. Fiercely intelligent, down to earth, funny, warm, and charming as hell. If ever a woman is charismatic enough to play De Niro’s wife in Goodfellas (and to make that much of an impression when Ray Liotta’s Henry Hill testifies against him in court — that look she gives!), it is Julie. It’s impossible not to fall in love with her.

That was my experience of her watching the interview. The details in this interview, and her obvious pride in her father’s accomplishments as an actor (she is an acting teacher herself, she knows her stuff) is very moving to me.

Did you know that John Garfield had a job once selling diaphragms door to door? Can you imagine being a housewife at home, your husband at work, there is a knock on the door, you open the door, and here is who you see standing there.

And he says, “Good afternoon, ma’am, I don’t want to take up too much of your time, but I wondered if you were happy with your birth control options? If not, then boy, do I have the diaphragm for you.”

I sure as hell would buy one. Just to keep the conversation going on longer.

Go check out Kim’s post, and the video clips. Must-see.

Sheila! Thanks for the kind words and sorry for the repeat video. Not sure what I did there as it’s such an important end to the interview, but it has been fixed, so no need for anyone to link to the YouTube clip.

    Thanks again!

Yours, and your fellow John Garfield devotee,

    Kim

Kim – believe me, I was on a mission to see that last clip, come hell or high water!! :)

Wonderful job, and keep up the good fight on the Garfield front. I keep hoping he’ll have a resurgence, and with people like you on the frontlines it’s sure to happen.

The whole thing was so moving. I want to take an acting class with her now – what a great energy! Loved her!
