Things I Said to Omar the Salesman Last Night As I Purchased My First iPhone

Taken with the Hipstamatic on my brand-new iPhone. Breakfast this morning

“Now, Omar, I want you to feel free to talk to me like I am a grandmother. I barely know how to text, mkay?”
“Please don’t judge me, but where is Facebook?”
“My fingertips are far too fat for this keyboard, Omar.”
“Now, talk to me about iTunes. I am terrified.”
“Can I use my Actors Equity discount for any of this?” (I could!)
“Omar, I need some sort of case, don’t you think? My friend has a blue case. It’s pretty. Could I have one like that?”
“So basically, the Bookmark function has been made irrelevant by the iPhone, is that right?”
“What’s your screenplay about?”

Like! I’m so glad you’re in the “family” now!

With the union discount (GO UNIONS) and my free upgrades, I got it cheap cheap. My iPod is on the fritz, my phone is dying, I looked at my two dying gadgets yesterday and thought, “This is ridiculous.”

I am in LOVE with it.

    Omar was unbelievably awesome.

Also, I can’t get email on my old phone. That wasn’t a problem when I had some sort of regular day-job in an office – but now, as a freelancer, I need to be getting emails whereever I am – my office being with me at all times. It’s going to make things SO much easier.

  4. I finally succumbed to the smart phone recently myself (My hubby is a googler so of course I had to go android)– oh why was I holding out for so long?

So what is the screenplay about?

  5. sheila says:

His crazy nights going clubbing. It sounded hilarious.

He told me he was having “writer’s block” recently, so he thought he needed to go out and have more adventures. I encouraged him to do so.

  6. sheila says:

He was extremely helpful, humorous and patient.

  7. miker says:

Wonderful shot, and a hilarious conversation!

I got a 3Gs for my work phone several months back. In spite of my general disdain for the Apple cult, I do like the darn thing. Apple definitely is best option for anyone who doesn’t enjoy spending time and effort playing with the guts of their technology.

You’ll get used to the keyboard – it’s really a lot faster than a hardware keyboards on my old phones, even with occasionally hitting the wrong character. Now predictive text, that’s a whole other can of worms. :-)

  8. sheila says:

    Yeah, I’ve seen that.

Well the keyboard isn’t a problem at all when I turn the iPhone horizontally, as Omar kindly showed me.

  9. De says:

For Christmas I got an Apple wireless keyboard that connects to my iPhone via bluetooth. I have a full-fledged computer that’s the size of my hand.

  10. sheila says:

Now that sounds really good actually. I don’t like the keyboard on the iPhone for anything other than texting or Twitter.

  11. Mark says:

One of us, one of us. Gooble-gobble, gooble-gobble.

/“Now, Omar, I want you to feel free to talk to me like I am a grandmother./

    Hahahahahahaha!!

  13. sheila says:

    hahahaha

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Omar did mention his childhood in Pakistan and how much he misses his grandmother. Of course he did. It was ME he was talking to. I have a strange gift for having immigrants from other countries tell me their life stories. I love it.

  14. Noonz says:

Ooh, Sheila, two more photo apps worth a try:

Plastic Bullet – It’s another “toy camera” app that I love.
Camera+ – Cool alternative to the standard camera that adds stuff like an image stabilizer, photo editing tools in-app, and some other neat stuff.

Also, the InstantWatcher app for managing your Netflix streaming queue is mega-spectacular.

    Have fun!

  15. sheila says:

    // Netflix streaming queue //

I don’t quite understand that language. But it sounds great!

  16. Noonz says:

Sorry! It’s an app version of http://www.instantwatcher.com, a website the specializes only in managing the Netflix Instant content. I rate it up there with the app that tells me the weather.

So I’m going thru the laborious process of loading up songs from iTunes onto iPhone. It appears pretty self-explanatory. Some of the songs were definitely on there yesterday – and now, when I click on the iPod logo, a white blank screen comes up. I have turned it off and back on again – not sure what the deal is. In iTunes, the “device” information for the iPhone is showing that I have loaded all of these songs on there. But they’re not showing up on the iPhone.

I’ve Googled for help, but am already bogged down.

    Any tips out there?

  18. Amit says:

Congrats! You’re going to love it.

Can you post a screenshot of the blank screen? Simultaneously press the lock button at the top and the home button.

Also, what does the iPhone device information say about number of songs/videos? You can see it by going to Settings > General > About.

  19. sheila says:

Amit – thank you so much for the tip (I had no idea how to do a screenshot!)

So the Device information was all there – but not showing up on the iPhone. I know this sounds so silly, but when I powered down totally, and then powered back up (which I actually had not known how to do) – all the songs were suddenly there. Weird! So looks like I’m up to speed.

    Thank you!
