I think, after reading that, that I need to take myself on a little foot-tour of Revolutionary-War-Era New York. I’ve never done it and I think it’s high time I did!
No wonder why none of McCullough’s books have gone out of print. He doesn’t just write about history – he seems to imagine himself back into time.
Beautiful. I’m just so moved by the description of McCullough’s enthusiasm … That enthusiasm totally comes across in his writing.
Score another parallel. I loved “John Adams” and am hoping to get my grubby little antennae deep into a copy of “1776” as soon as I can. McCullough deserves all the stuff they gave to guys like Bellisailes (sp?). But he’ll have the last laugh – people will be reading him a lot longer.
His biography of John Adams is just fantastic – a real highwater mark in the genre. Haven’t read 1776 yet but I can’t stinkin’ WAIT!
I highly recommend Jeff Shaara’s books “Rise To Rebellion” and “The Glorious Cause” to any interested in reading history as a novel.
I’m heading out to Monmouth Battlefield today on my way back to DC!
I think “John Adams” is a great book also. I learned a lot from it, not just about Adams but the era (We almost went to war with France?). At the risk of nitpicking an otherwise fine article, I don’t believe John Quincy Adams was part of Washington’s cabinet. Am I wrong on that or should we send the writer a copy of “John Adams” maybe?
Hmmm – well, George Washington did appoint John Quincy Adams as some minister – er – hang on. Washington appointed him as minister to the Netherlands.
Not quite a cabinet position – but he was kind of in Washington’s administration.
Yes, in 1794. But I don’t want to distract from the points you make about McCullough and all of the Revolutionary War history in New York City. He’s a great writer. I think the next time I get there I’ll have to do that walking tour also.
Sheila – The description the author gives of McCullough’s voice – um, anyone else thinking DAD? Any of my siblings, of course…
Jean – Got a little lump in my throat when you said that!!
