Washington and Lafayette, 1777

THE MEETING OF GEORGE WASHINGTON AND MARQUIS DE LAFAYETTE
August 1, 1777 –

Washington: We are rather embarrassed to show ourselves to an officer who has just left the army of France.

Lafayette: I am here, sir, to learn and not to teach.
