R.I.P., Spalding Gray

Spalding Gray’s body found in the East River.

Somewhere I guess I was holding out hope. That the man was holed up in a Nantucket cabin or something. Working on something new, maybe having a nervous breakdown, but not dead.

I can say, even though this is sad, and I didn’t know the man … at least his body was found. Now his family can have the closure of a burial, memorials can happen – the man can be acknowledged. An important part of grief.

But still. It’s sad.

Spalding Gray. Your writing and your one-man pieces were an inspiration not only to me, but to many others.

You will be very missed.

I was optomistic for a while, too. Then a few weeks back, you linked to a piece that was written by a friend of his, who noted that he hated being alone. I think that’s when I gave up hope.

    Damn.

  2. red says:

I keep thinking about him taking his son to see “Big Fish” and crying throughout the movie.

  3. Sad news

Spalding Gray’s body found in the East River The story still says “may be”, but it was just confirmed on the TV news. Emily’s comments Sheila’s comments…

  4. Bill McCabe says:

It isn’t unreasonable to hold out hope, how many people thought Elizabeth Smart was still alive? Or that one from Long Island who ran away for three weeks and turned up yesterday.

I’m not sure whether I believe in an afterlife or not, but I hope the man has found some peace.
