Which One Should I Watch First?

Occasionally, I go into somewhat of a fugue state and order things off of Amazon. I am quite good with my money, although, granted, I don’t have any of it. But I do not spend more than I earn, so I don’t ever go so nuts that I get in trouble. To me, a splurge is buying 3 DVDs off of Amazon. But there are times when I shop like that where the packages then start arriving and I can’t remember actually purchasing the items. It’s alarming.

Three movies arrived yesterday in the same package. I obviously bought them 4 or 5 days ago, but I have no memory of doing so. The package arriving was like Christmas morning, with myself as Santa.

These are movies I have seen multiple times, of course, but now I can see them whenever I want.

It’s humorous to me that these three particular movies would be all bundled up in the same package. Like, what the hell was going on with me during my crazy shopping spree? Normally, on Amazon, one thing leads to another similar thing. But here? I was clearly just blanking out my brain and deciding: What movies MUST I own?

Repulsion, Aliens and then Young Frankenstein. I always say end with the laugh. You’ve actually set up a perfect little film festival–disturbing to intense and then ending with absurd.

    Three ridiculously good choices. “SEDAGIVE?!”

“Oh. Where you going?… Oh, you men are all alike. Seven or eight quick ones and then you’re out with the boys to boast and brag. YOU BETTER KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT. Oh… I think I love him.

I hope it rains all weekend. I will not leave my apartment.

Aliens is one of my all time favorites. Maybe the most intense action movie ever made. From about the 30 minute mark on it’s hard to take a breath. At the end of the movie as Ripley rides down for her final battle with the “Mother” Alien, she pauses to take a deep breath and gather herself, and I distictly remember the movie audience I was with taking a deep breath as one at the same time. Really cool “audience” movie moment.

Quick question, is that the “Director’s cut”? (Can’t tell from your pic) If so it has about 17 minutes of added footage which only improve the movie, if that’s possible. Not really any new scenes (well, a few – you see what happens to Newt’s parents), but really just extended versions of existing scenes, which actually add a lot. Either way, enjoy!

(Glad I’m not the only one who often roots for rain on the weekend so I can watch more movies!)

Todd – yes, it’s the Director’s Cut. I’ve never seen the extended scenes before – I’m excited to hear your thoughts on them.

Yes, I saw it the movie theatre too and it was certainly one of the most memorable nights at the movies I have ever had. A group EVENT, just like you described.

It’s hot and humid here. There’s got to be some rain this weekend, right??

Jenette Goldstein as Pvt. Vasquez, “Aliens”

In a movie loaded with macho tough guys, she was the toughest person of all. She had an unbelievable screen presence in this movie. Amidst all the aliens and technology and special effects, it was impossible to take your eyes off her. Completely authentic. I expected a huge career here. Cameron gave her some bit parts in Terminator II and Titanic (what a shock- she’s not even Spanish!), and that was pretty much it. She’s still working a bit, mostly on TV, but never broke out. Nonetheless, this role made an indelible impression on me.

It’s been “threatening” to rain all summer but rarely has. I’ll do a little rain dance now, maybe put on Rain King by Counting Crows!

    “What movies MUST I own?”
Too often I feel like I answer that to myself with “ALL OF THEM!”
I confess – I have never seen ALIENS. Seriously. Not sure why. I think the summer it was a hit all my friends saw it without me and I just never got to it. Seriously. I will one day. The other two, though – cinema GOLD, Sheila, GOLD!
