So cool! Read all about it on Strange Maps!
In 1811, the Russian merchant and explorer Yakov Sannikov reported seeing a “bluish fog” to the northeast of the New Siberian Islands. In 1886 and 1893, fellow Russian explorer Eduard Toll also sighted what many by then presumed to be an as yet undiscovered island, provisionally named “Sannikov Land”. Intensive searches couldn?t locate it, but Sannikov Land appeared on maps well into the first half of the 20th century.
It’s the island from Life of Pi!
(I believe that whole book.)
tracey – shivers!! Wasn’t that island so scary? When he realizes what’s going on there??
Oh – and I believe that whole book too.
The whole thing totally happened. No question.
Sounds like the 1974 movie “Island at the Top of the World,” which starred, believe it or not, future Good Morning America host David Hartman. According to IMDB, “A Victorian gentleman hopes to find his long-lost son, who vanished whilst searching for a mysterious Viking community in a volcanic valley somewhere in uncharted Arctic regions. The gentleman puts together an expedition team to go on the search, but when they reach their destination they must escape from some Viking descendants who will kill to keep their existence a secret.”
