Loved him. Haunted art house cinemas in the ’60s. Loved ‘Sawdust and Tinsel’. Loved ‘Wild Strawberries’. Loved ‘The Seventh Seal’. I own it. I just watched it last week. Gunnar Bjornstrand is my favortie Bergman actor. Great as knight’s squire. Especially loved Bibi Anderson in that one too. Loved ‘The Virgin Spring’. I guess I can’t get enough of medieval bleak. I can’t say I ever saw anything of his that didn’t make a direct hit on me somehow somewhere. Ingmar Bergman belongs on the Mt. Rushmore of film makers.
I’m ashamed to say I’ve only seen a subset of Bergman’s films – the bleakness issue has always made me put off seeing some of them, in spite of their high quality. Smiles of a Summer Night is wonderful; Fanny & Alexander is one of my all-time favorite movies…
