Some no-fun-havin’ pee-hole asked me, “Is that band actually that big an influence in your life that you got a tattoo of them?”
It took me a minute to come up with an answer, in part because I was trying to sort through the stupid Zen-koan-ass logical problem embedded in the question, but also because I never really thought of Life Influence as being a natural predicate to tattoo design. So in response, I explained how I hate symbolism and meaning, and generally in life instead favor things that are funny and awesome.
Amen.
Also: Zen-koan-ass??
(Full disclosure: I admit that my tattoo has meaning. But I wouldn’t say it was FRAUGHT with meaning! You don’t need to read a scholarly paper to understand why I got it. My skin will not, as Patrick says, “implode under the metaphorical load”. hahahahahahaha)
I will almost certainly never get a tattoo (the needle-phobia thing, and also, I’m just not bad-ass enough), but if I did, it would be some kind of crazy thing that was not fraught with meaning.
I applaud Patrick on his choice. And I applaud him on coining the phrase “Zen-koan-ass,” which I am now going to be looking for an excuse to use all day.
Ill never get a tattoo either…but if I ever did, Devo would be a ROCKIN tattoo to get. LOVE ‘EM
THE 80s RULE!!!
I plan on getting one as soon as my ass is not so big a canvas, if you know what I mean.
I love the Devo tattoo!
where to start – DEVO – so much more than a band, and yet one of the 2 greatest bands of the 80s (and therefore of all time). and patrick’s comments on tattoos – i am too much of a sissy and commitmentphobe to have any, but my better half (6 tats) and my best friend (3 tats) are in complete agreement on the ‘meaning’ issue, and they also go nuts watching those tattoo shows, for the same reason.
this was one awesome post!
