Stuff I’ve Been Reading

— Too many Lou Reed elegies to count. This one, on Gawker, I found particularly moving. It seems fitting that I just finished Just Kids, by Patti Smith (so good, I sobbed through the last three pages), with her evocative rendering of what whole scene and time.

— This essay, “Son of Pong”, is one of the best things I’ve read all week.

— I read this piece and wanted to cheer.

— I thoroughly enjoyed this graphic. (While the topic may be graphic, the graph is not graphic. It’s safe for work, in other words. Understood?) The references are not the ones I would choose, but I found myself laughing in recognition at some of those silly graphs. Funny. Clever.

— A letter from Kurt Vonnegut to a high school class. I miss him.

— My friend Matt Seitz’s new book The Wes Anderson Collection is taking the world by storm. I’m so psyched for him. In case you weren’t aware of the cool promotion Matt has been doing for it, wanted to let you all know. He collaborated with Steven Santos in creating video essays for each section of the book, sort of to highlight the different Anderson films and some of the issues that are addressed in the book. A beautiful and innovative thing, and I highly recommend not only the book but watching the videos as well. Matt does narration (writing and voice), Santos did the editing.

Just Kids is one of those books that changed my life. It scared me almost, but it finally goaded me into leaving my safe places and packing up to move. I’ll always be grateful too it, for making me take my life and what I want to do with it seriously.

      Really! I didn’t know that.

Wow – can totally see how that book would do that. Awesome. You should write Patti Smith a letter. :)

      POWERFUL book!!

Gosh I should. But It’s one of those intensely personal things I’m almost embarrassed too.

Piece on Lou Reed is wonderful, it says everything you need to know about the power of music. Love that the author got to meet him, and that he was warm. Hand holding story is one I wont forget. Great link, thanks. RIP Lou.

I know, the hand holding! And how they felt awkward at first, but then had to submit. Because it’s Lou Reed holding their hand.
