Not just the photo – which is certainly extraordinary – but the comment thread (comments on that site go from bottom to top – so start at the bottom). I feel close to tears for some reason, reading Alex’s polite query and the equally polite responses.

I see what you mean, I think. Alex’s query is adorable and sweet, but also revealing. I mean, I take it for granted or work it out automatically: Civil War + mention of Richmond = Richmond, Virginia. And then if I think about it at all after that, it’s only to cap the whole equation off with “duh!”
But I read a comment like Alex’s and have to have second thoughts like, no, wait, maybe I’m the dummy: We have 23 Richmonds in this country? Really? I did not know that! Thanks, Alex! I learn something new every day.
As for the photo, I wish there were some way to tell what those kids on the bridge were thinking. I wonder.
It’s nice to be reminded that courtesy and decency aren’t dead.
