Review: The Right Kind of Wrong (2014)

large_right

Watching The Right Kind of Wrong, it became a fun game to “spot the folks who also appeared on Supernatural“, the main one being the lead actress, Sara Canning, who played the Amazon in Season 7’s “Slice Girls”. But there’s another one hidden in the mix, and there may be more.

The Right Kind of Wrong is a rom-com out of Canada; it has all the elements but doesn’t really work. It requires you to find stalking charming.

My review is now up at Roger Ebert.

O for it to be Catherine O’Hara!

      She is so insanely brilliant.

No, the other guy I recognized from a Supernatural episode was the hot guy from The Curious Case of Dean Winchester, the one who was old and then became young. He plays an aggressive skeevy lawyer who wears a white silk scarf around his neck in Right Kind of Wrong. Clocked him immediately.

She’s one of my absolute favourites, just so clever. I don’t know how her vibe could fit in with Supernatural but it’s a malleable enough show, I am sure they could make it work!

Ryan Kwanten is (or was, I stopped watching eventually) very, very funny on True Blood and has been good in a couple of local films so I hope he gets some better material going forward.

I’m glad I watched it, if only for Catherine O’Hara’s line-reading of that one crazy line I mentioned. I am still laughing about it.

I came to Supernatural late, finding it last year on Netflix, and binge-watched it with my 14-year-old daughter. Having an 11-year-old as well, I’m well acquainted with the Canadian-produced kids’ shows on YTV. It’s been fun watching child actors that we’ve seen (and it seems like most of the cast of Mr. Young in particular) in shows on that network turn up in Supernatural episodes. I imagine they’re all Vancouver-located actors.

The little girl Sam rescues from the pool in ‘Playthings’? Echo from Mr. Young. Billy from ‘Mother’s Little Helper? Slab from Mr. Young. Also Collette from ‘First Born’, Dylan (the teen who’s dragged under the Impala and killed by a demon in the episode about the Whore of Babylon), and one of the Paris Hilton fans in ‘Fallen Idols’ — all from that same show. Little Red Riding Hood from ‘Bedtime Stories’, Victoria Duffield, was a finalist on ‘The Next Star’, a Canadian Idol for kids show, and now has a recording career.
