I have great affection for Shane, and Van Heflin’s performance is great. His scene wherein he tells his wife he knows she will be taken care of if anything happens to him–“maybe better than I could do it myself”–never fails to move me, and I think it is an incredibly written and acted scene. His character is the meat and potatoes that holds that movie together. Shane is on my family’s list of movies that we get together and watch at least one time a year, and I see new things in it each viewing. Van Heflin gives a great performance, and one that is, as usual, underrated.
