Sam Shaw’s artistry: Marilyn Monroe

Another one of my favorites from the Shaw / Monroe collaboration.

This is an interior shot, so there is probably some artificial lighting going on, but the effect is that of totally natural light. And while she can’t help but be glamorous – because she, like Jessica Rabbit, is just “drawn that way” … it also has a candid “caught” feeling to it, that, to me, deepens our view of Miss Monroe. It’s not quite a “glamour” shot. She’s a woman in a slip, beautiful, yes, with a slamming body, but more is going on there … she is “caught” in what appears to be almost a private moment.

A beautiful photo.

Here goes the broken record again: SO.BEAUTIFUL.

And I am almost sure that there is no artificial lighting involved, I believe it’s Shaw’s artistry, he certainly knew how to take a pic with available light. There are others of Marilyn at the window (taken by other photographers) where you can see clearly that a flash (or other artificial light) was used to illuminate her face. But this pic is so much better! I love “available light”!!!

I love the detailed knowledge you bring to these conversations, Ceci. It certainly looks like all natural light – and I love the random wires on the floor – it doesn’t look like a “set” – it looks like she lives there.

He really was a genius with natural light.
