Movie Poster: The Way We Were

One of the things that I think is effective about this poster is that it is NOT what is expected: two closeups of the two world-famous leads, with their floating glamorous heads over the title, wistful serious expressions on their faces, or some other unbearable thing. I am not against floating-head posters on principle, they certainly can work, but I do like to see a poster that goes outside the box a little bit.

Two of the biggest stars in the world – and yes, their names are in red – that’s the focus – but they are two small figures walking along a beach, almost like it’s a grainy photo from their photo album.

I just think it works, that’s all.

Really enjoying all of the posters – some I’d seen, a lot I hadn’t.

This one stopped me in my tracks. It’s one of those movies that’s so personal and painful to watch that I’m not sure if I even like it. (so I usually avoid it) It’s like a photo out of my own album.

My 20’s: intense, mismatched lovers + inevitable heartbreak = bittersweet single motherhood.

Rose – yes, I have movies like that, too. Ones I pretty much need to stay away from.

I just like the kind of faded black-and-white feel here – which does give you the feeling you’re looking thru a photo album. It’s already wistful. Like … it’s over. You know that from the poster.

Wistful is the perfect word for it.

*the tagline is really bugging me now though: “Everything seemed so important then…even love!” How depressing to think that one of the people looking back on that time is so disenchanted with life that they think nothing now should be “so important…even love”.

Heh. I think mebbe I’ll go have some coffee and stop reading too much into movie posters! :)

Rose – I agree. Dumb tagline!
