That clip is just gobsmackingly awesome.
It really is. They had a very interesting relationship. I just love how close and in sync they are, and how Ali keeps his eyes on Sam Cooke, for the most part.

This was filmed for a programme called Grandstand, a long running BBC sports roundup show. The interviewer here is Harry Carpenter, a well known (at least to us Brits) boxing commentator who died a few years ago. I first saw this clip years ago on a documentary about Sam Cooke and it was great to be reminded of it. I’ve been a fan of Sam since my teens. Fabulous voice!
Abigail – excellent information, thank you! I read Peter Guralnick’s biography of Sam Cooke and there was so much interesting stuff in there about this friendship and I do remember him analyzing this one particular clip.
