Barbara Meek, Part 2: Patsy Rodenburg’s Lecture “Why I Do Theatre”

Please watch. It’s so important.

Acting teacher Patsy Rodenburg gives one of the most extraordinary explanations from any artist about why they do what they do, why they put up with the bullshit, what they are really after in such a rigorous and sometimes thankless career.

I thought of this clip when I heard of the passing of Rhode Island acting icon, Barbara Meek. Her career was a living example of what Patsy Rodenburg was talking about.

I have a file on my computer where I write down things that help me keep going. Why do I do the things I do? (not that I am an amazing actor or anything). There are names, titles, links, quotes, sentences that probably don’t mean anything except for myself (although SPN fans would probably get a few of those ;) ). There is also the link to that Patsy Rodenburg video you posted. I haven’t re-watched it. I haven’t needed to. I remember.

    Tears …

I know. I can’t watch it too much – it’s too powerful – but it is so important, such a good reminder of what really matters.

and how painful it is when we recognize ourselves in art sometimes. We reject it. But it’s identification.

      So so deep.

This was amazing. Thanks for posting it. I went on to find the video for the Second Circle, and man, that explains, like, everything.

    • sheila says:

Anne – you are so right. I just watched the Second Circle lecture. Extraordinary.

“If you want to seduce someone, take them out to a restaurant and stay in Second Circle.”

Incredible lessons for life. I also love her point that we need all three circles – at different times, different contexts.
